Queen Letizia Wears Namesake Calzados Picón Espadrille Wedges

Queen Letizia has found a way to make a nearly 4-inch espadrille wedge look like a work shoe. Following the World Cup celebrations with the national team earlier this week, the Spanish royal returned to Calzados Picón on Thursday, wearing the label’s aptly named “Letizia” wedges for two audiences at Zarzuela Palace in Madrid.

Her pair combined a closed black almond-toe upper with a white woven heel counter and black ribbons tied low around the ankle. The 3.7-inch height was distributed across a broad braided-jute wedge with a slight platform through the front, rather than concentrated on a narrow heel.

Letizia paired the wedges with Antik Batik’s navy Dalli maxidress, a sleeveless style with a gathered high neckline, tied waist and full tiered skirt. White embroidery curved across the shoulders, while rows of wavy trim followed the skirt’s seams. Rather than continue the dress in a solid navy shoe, she repeated its dark-and-light contrast with black at the toe and white at the heel. She added Isabel Guarch’s Vents earrings in 18-karat yellow gold and diamonds.

Espadrilles have become less of an occasional summer choice and more of a uniform for Letizia this season. Back in June, she opted for a bright, monochrome look, matching hot pink Calzados Picón wedges with a coordinating Hugo Boss shirtdress. At the beginning of July, she shifted the shoe into business-casual territory, pairing navy Marina DUO wedges with high-waisted trousers and a crisp white shirt.

At Zarzuela Palace, Letizia first met university students awarded scholarships by the BBVA Microfinance Foundation. She later received the young journalists and communicators behind “Los Nietos del Silencio,” a documentary centered on the grandchildren of victims of the now-defunct Basque separatist group ETA.
