‘The Odyssey’ Tour Brings Method Dressing to an Entirely New Level

There’s method acting, method directing — and now method dressing. And global red carpet rollout of “The Odyssey” has taken it to an entirely new level.

Few movie press tours have evolved method dressing quite like “The Odyssey.” After “Barbie” turned pink into a global phenomenon and “Challengers” made tennis whites a thing again, the red carpets for Christopher Nolan’s epic raised the bar once more. For full transparency, Ancient Greece has been inspiring fashion for decades. From Madame Grès and Gianni Versace to today’s couture runways, designers have long looked to Grecian legacy — including draping, sculptural silhouettes, metallic finishes and goddess glamour — as the ultimate inspiration. Instead of dressing like their costume-y characters, the cast of “The Odyssey” and their images architects tapped into that rich fashion history to encapsulate the film’s mood — and capture everyone’s imagination as much off the screen as on.

Zendaya, who stars as Athena, once again proved she is the queen of today’s red carpet method dressing. Working with Law Roach, they avoided the obvious goddess clichés. Instead, the pair leaned into sculptural couture, luminous textures, metallic finishes and dramatic proportions that hinted at mythology without looking like a goddess going to a Halloween party (although there are likely to be lots of those come October). From Schiaparelli haute couture and Louis Vuitton to archival Givenchy by Alexander McQueen and Matières Fécales, every look was impacful, and together they built one of the red carpet’s strongest fashion narratives of the year.

The winged Matières Fécales gown at the New York premiere quickly became the defining image of the tour, while the archival Givenchy worn with the Eiffel Tower head piece by Philip Treacy at the Paris premiere added even more drama. In London, Zendaya pulled off one of fashion’s favorite red carpet flexes, wearing a Schiaparelli couture look that debuted on the Paris runway only hours earlier. That same-day turnaround was more than impressive logistics — it was another reminder of the intimate relationship between runway and red carpet and the latter’s ability to turn a look into an instant pop culture moment.

Jewelry played an equally important role. Rather than simply finishing each look, it helped reinforce the story. Zendaya mixed high jewelry from Chopard and Messika with sculptural gold pieces by Fope, along with ancient inspired accessories including headpieces, ear cuffs, diamond chokers and gladiator sandals.

The beauty was equally smart because it never tried too hard. Glowing skin, softly defined makeup and elegant hairstyles from sleek pullbacks to ethereal long and braided were the perfect additions but still let the clothes and jewelry do the talking. The result was even more impactful.

Anne Hathaway, who portrays Penelope, took a very different approach. Rather than leaning into mythology, she embraced timeless elegance through fluid silhouettes from Dior, Louis Vuitton and Prada. Her maternity style became part of the conversation, celebrating rather than hiding her changing body. Bulgari high jewelry completed the looks with refined diamond pieces that echoed Penelope’s quiet strength without overwhelming the clothes, either.

Lupita Nyong’o, who plays Helen of Troy, delivered some of the tour’s most regal fashion moments. Working with stylist Micaela Erlanger, she embraced couture silhouettes and exceptional jewelry that reflected Helen’s legendary beauty without being too literal. “Without dipping too far into method dressing, we played with motifs like draped silhouettes, structural details and monochromatic fabrics that felt like just enough of a wink for those eagle-eyed fashion fans who were looking for it. I liked referencing the original story in unexpected ways,” said Erlanger of her overall approach to press tour red carpet. The duo opted for pieces from Sabyasachi, including striking pearl and diamond creations, alongside Garatti Milano and Sauer high jewelry pieces helped elevate the final looks.

Charlize Theron, portraying the immortal nymph Calypso, offered perhaps the most understated interpretation of method dressing. Rather than embracing obvious seduction, she favored liquid silhouettes, reflective fabrics and elongated tailoring from Dior, Tom Ford and Givenchy. Jewelry from Tiffany & Co., Glenn Spiro and Dior High Jewelry added another layer of quiet glamour, suggesting Calypso’s mystique through refinement instead of theatrics.

The men offered an equally interesting lesson — they avoided method dressing completely. Matt Damon as Odysseus, Tom Holland as Telemachus and Robert Pattinson as Antinous relied on impeccable tailoring, luxurious fabrics and understated elegance rather than echo their characters. If women have turned method dressing into an art form, the male actors embraced comfort, and let craftsmanship and subtle styling carry the story. Besides, Damon showing up in full gladiator armor probably isn’t the kind of red carpet Hollywood is looking for.

“The Odyssey” is already a blockbuster at the box office, but its fashion has been as well. Fashion has for decades played a key role at film premieres and award shows. But in this age of instant social media images swirling across the globe, the red carpet — and the images generated from it — has become as vital a part of a movie’s marketing campaign as any film poster or preview. It is a way to extend the movie’s world through high fashion and glamour — and stars, their stylists and brands are diving in more than ever.
