Thief Gold with updated graphics and integrated modern controller support is the latest addition to GOG’s preservation program, ahead of Nightdive’s full remaster

GOG, famed revampers of classic PC games, have done just that to the Gold edition of beloved purse-snatching stealth romp Thief: The Dark Project. Through the storefront’s preservation program, the GOG version of Thief Gold boasts a number of handy tweaks to help it run seamlessly on modern hardware.

Having been voted into the GOG reverse engineering team’s hands via the store’s backers, Thief Gold’s had its graphics and audio updated, its interface scaled properly, and its controls optimised. German, French, and Polish localisations have been lobbed in, as has an update to the latest version of the NewDark 1.27 engine. Full support for modern controllers is also part of the package, thanks to the integration of modder Peter Wright’s Thief Gamepad Mod.

“With this release, we wanted to honor the incredible work the community has been doing for years,” GOG technical producer Adam Ziółkowski said in a press release. “That’s why we’ve updated the GOG version with NewDark 1.27, bringing massive compatibility improvements for modern PCs. A huge shoutout goes to Peter Wright for his fantastic Gamepad Mod, which we’ve integrated alongside our own GOG Input Wrapper to make Thief play beautifully on modern controllers. And for the purists: you can now launch the original, pre-Gold version of the game with a single click in the launcher.”

It might end up paleing in comparison to the full Thief: The Dark Project remaster old game TLC specialists Nightdive announced last month (we opted not to news that reveal, instead planning on wrangling an interview that hasn’t quite come to fruition yet for reasons which start with B and rhyme with fizzy), but hey, any excuse to go back and crouch walk through some moody gothic corridors.

Anyway, revamped Thief: Gold is currently on offer for £1.49/equivalent via GOG’s store, and it’ll go back up to £5.99/equivalent once that deal ends. Here are some musings on The Dark Project from Alice B (RPS in peace) and some other Treehouse luminaries if you fancy reading about why you should join Garrett in his pilfering.
