Melee legend Mang0 quits Smash event after backlash despite being 300 days sober

Super Smash Bros Melee God Mang0 dropped out of an Ultimate event after backlash over his invite.

In June 2025, Joseph ‘Mang0’ Marquez was removed from C9 and banned from Melee tournaments for a year for his drunken behavior at Ludwig’s Beerio Kart event in which he harassed multiple streamers, including ExtraEmily.

Ludwig was also accused of “enabling” Mang0 by making light of the Smash player’s drunkenness with a breathalyzer, but the Fox/Falco main took full responsibility and vowed to get sober.

Amid Mang0’s sobriety journey, he revealed that he doesn’t plan to compete in Melee tournaments again without a sponsor and paying out of pocket, but that didn’t rule out other Smash games like Ultimate.

On April 9, The Get Back 2, an online Smash Ultimate tournament, revealed that Mang0 would be competing alongside Ult greats like Sparg0 and MkLeo. Still, the announcement drew backlash, eventually causing the former pro to release a statement.

In a post on X, Marquez noted that he had been invited to play in the online Smash Ultimate tournament.

“There seems to be some people upset by that,” the Twitch streamer said.

The event announcement featured several comments by figures within the Smash community who were upset by the decision to include Mang0.

“The Mang0 stuff makes me sad. I’m glad i’m not in a position where I have to make these kinds of hard choices about whether or not to let someone into a space. He really did something messed up,” Smash commentator Daramgaria said in its post on X.

“I am tired of people platforming people who have engaged in sexual misconduct and giving them free passes because they’re good at the game,” another chimed in. “How deplorable a person you have to be to willingly empower and platform someone like that.”

Not every comment was negative, however. Many were excited to see Mang0 compete, especially in a Smash game other than Melee, but that didn’t stop Marquez from deciding to pull out.

“I thought it was fine because it’s a fun stream idea and I’ve been making progress being 300 days sober. Not here to make anyone upset, so I don’t mind skipping,” he said and attached a photo of himself giving a thumbs up.

Mang0 being 300 days sober makes him just a few months away from completing his goal of being sober for a full year, but the former Melee pro has indicated that he doesn’t want to stop drinking completely in his life.

He previously said that events like his birthday or Christmas with his family are better with alcohol, and plans on drinking again at some point in his life.

We’ll have to see what the future holds for Mang0 as he creeps up on being one year sober, and if we ever see him compete in a Melee tournament again once his ban is up.
