- Disney has ordered a pilot for a TV series based on 2006’s ‘Aquamarine.’
- Sarah Watson is writing the episode.
- The film’s lead Emma Roberts will guest star in the pilot.
Back in 2006, mermaid movie ‘Aquamarine’ saw some choppy critical waters and didn’t really swim far at the box office, but has enjoyed a cult following in the years since.
That’s clearly enough for Disney, which has now commissioned a pilot for a Disney+ show adapting the movie’s story, which will be overseen by ‘The Bold Type’s Sarah Watson, with the film’s director, Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum on board to shoot the pilot and executive produce.

“A Fish-Out-Of-Water Comedy.”
Release Date: Mar 3, 2006
Run Time: 1 hr 43 min
Budget: $12,000,000
And to add to the connections with the original, star Emma Roberts is aboard to reprise her role as Claire Brown, who in the movie was one of a pair of friends who discovered a mermaid living in their beach club’s swimming pool.

What’s the story of the ‘Aquamarine’ series?

Here’s the pilot logline for your informational needs:
“When teenaged Coral moves to a dreamy seaside town, she begins unraveling the truth behind her mother’s disappearance—and discovers her mother was a mermaid, awakening magical powers in Coral just as secrets beneath the waves threaten to surface.”
That suggests a tie to the original movie’s Aquamarine, played by Sara Paxton.
Where else can we see Emma Roberts?
Most recently on screen in ‘Space Cadet,’ Roberts will return to the small-screen ‘American Horror Story’ franchise, with the new season set to air in September. She’s also worked on upcoming movies including ‘The Technique’ and ‘Hal.’
