Former spinner Moeen Ali suggested that India should bring back T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav after they ended on the wrong end of a 0-4 scoreline and a surrender of the No.1 spot in the ICC team rankings to England.

Heading into Saturday’s final match in Southampton, India were simply hoping to salvage some pride after an extended winless run, but instead watched England rack up a massive 257 for 3, with the hosts smashing 17 sixes, the second-highest tally India have ever conceded in a T20I.

The 56-run defeat completed a clean 0-4 sweep and cost India their long-held position at the top of the ICC’s T20I team rankings. Since taking charge, Iyer has now overseen six defeats in seven matches as captain, with one game ending without a result.

Suryakumar, who led India to their T20 World Cup triumph earlier this year, was replaced by Iyer, a decision chief selector Ajit Agarkar defended as the right call at the time. Agarkar acknowledged that recent form had played a role, but insisted the change was driven more by long-term thinking than short-term performance dips.

“I mean, you look at his performance in the last couple of years. But he was a captain who was doing really well, winning so many games,” he said.

“He eventually ended up winning the World Cup. Obviously, we deliberated it a lot, especially when someone led you to a World Cup. It’s not the easiest sort of discussion to have, but at some stage, we were going to look at it.

“Whether the IPL form dictated it, I’m not so sure that’s the case. There were always conversations around it. Like I said, because Shreyas is playing as well as he is, particularly with the bat, sometimes makes the decision a little bit easier.”

Moeen Ali urges India to reconsider Suryakumar Yadav’s case

Ali believes that Suryakumar should remain central to India’s T20 plans. He described him as one of the best players in the world, comparing his influence to that of Hardik Pandya.

“You need him on. You keep Surya. Surya. I genuinely reckon you keep Surya. He’s one of the best players in the world,” Moeen Ali said in a podcast named Beard Before Wicket.

“He has that about him. Hardik has that about him, I don’t know if he’s injured or whatever. You know. And then the guys around him they perform and they rub off on him. And then they have that sort of same presence almost, and the same… Yeah, that’s how it works. You can’t just change the whole team. Get rid of probably your best player, in my opinion, Surya.”

India’s stretch of 1,605 consecutive days at the top of the T20I rankings ranks among the longest in the format’s history, built on dominant home form and back-to-back World Cup wins.

Losing that status within a single difficult overseas tour makes the fall feel particularly sudden. Even so, India remain the reigning world champions, and rankings alone don’t fully reflect a team’s overall pedigree.

Still, six losses and a winless run across seven completed matches in Ireland and England exposed real gaps in how the side handles pace, bounce and seam movement away from home.

Is Suryakumar Yadav the fix to India’s woes?

Ali’s argument carries weight as abandoning a captain who delivered a World Cup title within months of that triumph does seem like a hasty pivot, especially given how directly results have declined since.

That said, Agarkar’s point about long-term planning isn’t baseless either as transitions in leadership often need to begin before performance completely collapses, not after.

The real issue isn’t necessarily who captains the side, but whether India’s broader approach to overseas conditions needs restructuring regardless of who’s leading.

Reinstating Suryakumar might offer short-term stability, but unless the deeper tactical and preparation issues are addressed, simply swapping captains risks becoming a temporary fix rather than a genuine solution.
