New Suikoden anime trailer showcases a slick look for this classic RPG adaptation

A brand-new trailer for Suikoden: The Anime was released over the weekend at Anime Expo. The Konami show will adapt the classic 1998 role-playing game Suikoden 2, perhaps the most popular entry in the franchise. The new trailer shows off some slick animation and comes alongside the announcement of the anime’s theme song and some new cast members.

The majority of the short trailer (it is just over a minute) showcases the anime’s take on some early moments from the game between its two main characters, Riliu and Jowy. The pair share a moment beneath the night sky before taking part in a battle and running across the environment in a smooth segment that blends 2D and 3D animation. The trailer is set to amazarashi’s song “Kanaashimi Sae Otonobite,” which will serve as the show’s opening theme.

Suikoden: The Anime is set to premiere this October in Japan, with no current information on when an international release may be coming. The show’s first three episodes will be premiered by Konami in 10 movie theaters across Japan as a compilation film, starting on Aug. 21. The newly announced cast included Jin Yamanoi as Agares Bligh, Miyuko Sawashiro as Anabelle, and Kodai Sakai as Jess. They join previously announced cast members including Toshiki Kumagai as Riliu and Shimba Tsuchiya as Jowy, amongst others. YUZO (Attack on Titan, Exception) is the chief director with series composition by Michihiro Tsuchiya (Akane-banashi), animation character designs by Ryo Yamauchi (My Master Has No Tail), and music by Koji Nakamura.

Suikoden 2 is largely considered to be the best entry in Konami’s lengthy role-playing game series. Most recently, the game was remastered in 2025 as part of a bundle with the first Suikoden. The story is as follows in the show’s official description:

Two young boys… the hero, Riliu, and his best friend Jowy, were members of a youth brigade of their home nation, the Highland Kingdom — a powerful military nation located in the north-east of the Dunan region. The two of them looked up at the same starry skies, slept in the same tent, and believed in the same future. Once the fighting was over, and the night ended, their daily lives were sure to return. Contrary to their hopes, the two boys become swept up in the whirlpool of fate, guided by the flames of war. The powerless boys reached for, and grasped immense power. As the 108 stars shine brightly in the murky horizon, the boys step forward, each with their own beliefs for an answer-less question.

The mention of “108 stars” is a reference to the number of recruitable characters in the game. If Konami plans to adapt every single one of those characters for the anime in some way or another, it will be an interesting undertaking to make sure they each get their due.
