A pilot operating a Cessna 182 Skylane RG has taken six hours to fly above the skies of Ohio to etch a piece of history for USA250 in a flight map as the United States celebrates its 250th year of independence on July 4. Departing from Norwalk Huron County Airport in July at around 6:00 AM, before landing at lunch.
This would have put the aircraft to its legal and physical endurance limits as noted by AirLive, as the airplane can hold approximately 85 gallons of fuel, and burns on average, 11 to 14 gallons per hour, subject to the power settings and altitude. For the pilot, his patriotic act is now hitting headlines on the likes of Flightradar24 and now Simple Flying.
Celebrating USA 250 With A Map Etched In The Sky
The Cessna celebrated America’s upcoming semiquincentennial with a six-hour journey from Norwalk, where the Cessna 182 etched its own unique flight map in the skies between Toledo in the west and Cleveland in the east. For the pilot, the flight preparation must have taken some time to ensure the flight path followed would exactly outline the map of the contiguous United States, including all its bordering lakes and peninsulas, and panhandles, while including the words ‘USA 250th’ in its interior.
Unfortunately, on this occasion, the pilot did not include the states of Alaska and Hawaii in his flight map, which has been called out by a few after his flight map went viral on social media.
As commended by Flightradar24 on X, this pilot celebrated USA 250 with a special flight, while others across the country are likely lining their coolers with drinks and food for a party, or preparing with fireworks or parades.
Aircraft Details: N4936T
The airplane at the centre of the unique flight map is similar to that pictured, and carries US registration N4936T (serial number R18201794). It is an R182 retractable gear Cessna 182 Skylane RG, which, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) registry, is a fixed-wing, single-engine airplane. It was first manufactured in 1981 and has a registered owner of Dakma LLC, of Parma, Ohio.
Onboard the 182, it can accommodate one pilot and three passengers and features retractable landing gear, while being able to achieve cruise speeds of around 173 knots (199 mph / 318 kmph). Its ability to retract its landing gear allows the plane to boast up to 15% speed and climb improvements over the fixed gear variant.
Original models of the 182 Skylane had a modest fuel tank with a capacity of 85 gallons. Between 1979 and 1986, the aircraft had developed to a wet wing design which could increase its capacity to 92 gallons (of which 88 were usable). The average price to purchase an aircraft of this type varies from $50,000 to $350,000.
