TSA PreCheck Touchless ID Gets Major Expansion With New Google Wallet Option

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is expanding its TSA PreCheck Touchless ID program by allowing eligible travelers to enroll through Google Wallet, marking the first time a digital wallet has been integrated with the biometric identity verification system. Announced June 24, the partnership gives TSA PreCheck members with an eligible digital ID a faster, more streamlined way to access dedicated Touchless ID screening lanes at participating airports without repeatedly enrolling through individual airlines.

The move significantly broadens access to a program designed to reduce airport checkpoint delays by using secure facial comparison technology instead of routine physical ID checks. TSA PreCheck Touchless ID is now available at 65 airports nationwide and supports more than 100 participating airlines. The Google Wallet integration is rolling out over the coming weeks ahead of the busy summer travel season, with TSA positioning the partnership as another step toward modernizing airport security while maintaining passenger privacy and security standards.

Before this update, travelers who wanted to use Touchless ID generally had to enroll separately through participating airlines by adding passport information to their airline profile and opting in before each eligible flight. While the process worked, frequent flyers using multiple carriers often had to repeat enrollment across different airline accounts. The Google Wallet integration replaces that fragmented approach with a single enrollment pathway.

Now, travelers first create a digital ID in Google Wallet using a valid U.S. passport. After checking in with a participating airline and saving their boarding pass to Google Wallet, eligible users receive a “Get Started” prompt that directs them to TSA’s consent page. Once they authorize sharing their digital ID and boarding pass information, TSA confirms enrollment and updates the boarding pass with a TSA PreCheck Touchless ID indicator for use at participating checkpoints. Shelu Patel, TSA’s Modernization Acting Chief Innovation Officer, emphasized efficiency in the agency’s official announcement about the partnership. Patel said the collaboration with Google helps trusted travelers enjoy the fastest route through airport security while supporting the agency’s broader modernization efforts.

“TSA is fully dedicated to enhancing the passenger experience through advanced technology and strategic partnerships… Our collaboration with Google helps our trusted TSA PreCheck travelers enjoy the fastest route through airport security. Delivering seamless experiences like this is one more way TSA is working to deliver the Golden Age of Travel.

Touchless ID allows TSA officers to verify a traveler’s identity using secure facial comparison technology rather than requiring the routine presentation of a physical identification document or boarding pass. The technology is available only in designated TSA PreCheck lanes and is intended to speed identity verification while maintaining existing security procedures. Eligible travelers must still be enrolled in TSA PreCheck and possess a valid US passport. TSA also advises passengers to continue carrying a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of identification because officers may request physical ID if necessary.

According to TSA, the Google Wallet option does not replace existing airline enrollment methods. Travelers can continue enrolling directly through participating airlines, including legacy carriers like American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines. However, using Google Wallet allows eligible passengers to enroll once instead of managing separate registrations across multiple carriers, making the experience considerably more convenient for travelers who regularly fly different airlines.

Because biometric verification continues to raise privacy concerns for some travelers, both TSA and Google emphasize that participation remains entirely voluntary. Travelers must actively opt in after checking in for each eligible trip before any information is shared with TSA. Google says digital IDs stored in Google Wallet remain encrypted on the device and are only shared after users authenticate the request using their phone’s security features, such as biometrics, a PIN, or a pattern. TSA states that photographs captured during the identity verification process are used only to confirm a traveler’s identity, are not used for law enforcement or surveillance purposes, are not shared with other organizations, and are generally deleted within 24 hours after the traveler’s scheduled flight departure.

The expansion represents one of the largest upgrades to TSA PreCheck Touchless ID since the program launched. By making Google Wallet the first digital wallet to support enrollment, TSA has simplified access to biometric identity verification across more than 100 participating airlines while reducing the administrative burden that previously limited wider adoption. As the rollout continues nationwide, the agency expects the streamlined enrollment process to encourage more TSA PreCheck members to take advantage of one of the fastest screening options currently available at US airports.
