Following the last Destiny 2 update, layoffs at Bungie are underway, with most of the shooter’s team affected

Back in May, Bungie announced that their long running shooter MMO Destiny 2 would be getting its final ever big update in June. At the time there were rumours that layoffs would follow not long after the update arrived. Now, a little over two weeks since the update dropped, Bungie have confirmed that layoffs are taking place.

“With great sadness, we are announcing a reduction in force as we reorganize Bungie. As the leaders of Bungie, past and present, we recognize Destiny 2 fell short of expectations these past several years,” reads Bungie’s statement. “Following our final content update to Destiny 2, and with our future projects still in early incubation, we unfortunately could not continue operating at our previous size.”

The note goes on to make mention of the “profound impact” these layoffs will have on staff and their families affected by the decision. There is no mention of how leadership at Bungie may take responsibility for Destiny 2’s failure to meet expectations, only saying that “these changes are necessary to best position the studio now and for the future.”

In a separate message from Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hermen Hulst, further details were shared regarding the scale of the layoffs, explaining that most of the Destiny team and some of the Marathon team are included. “There are also reductions across SIE teams that support Bungie’s operations,” the message explains. It also notes that Marathon “remains an important part of our portfolio, and we will continue to support the team as they build on the strong foundation established in Season 1 and 2, and as they work on incubation efforts for future projects.” So, at least for a while longer, Marathon will push on.

As always, solidarity with those affected by the layoffs.
