Mayor Zohran Mamdani touts democratic socialist policies as his political star rises

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani had two words for Republicans who want to label him as the “poster child” for the Democratic party, “Let them.”

The democratic socialist mayor spoke exclusively with “This Week” co-anchor Jonathan Karl about the year after his upset mayoral primary victory that stunned not only the Big Apple but also the country.

His popularity and influence carried over into this year’s primary where three of his endorsed candidates won their congressional primaries, two of whom unseated multi-term Democrats.

Mamdani told Karl in his first sit-down interview since the primaries that since he took office in January, his administration has delivered to working class New Yorkers, “the very things we were told were impossible.”

“We’ve delivered free childcare for 2-year-olds for the first time in New York City history. We’ve delivered tens of millions of dollars back to tenants who were taken advantage of by bad landlords. We’ve delivered 165,000 potholes being paved, and we’ve done all of these things while also delivering the lowest recorded crime in our city’s history,” he said.

The mayor said New Yorkers aren’t the only ones noticing those changes.

“What you’re seeing is that New Yorkers experienced this for six months and made the decision that they wanted to see more of it on the national stage as well,” he said.
