Cathie from Canada: Things that piss me off and things that make me happy. Plus World Cup Stories

First, I was so happy today to see that PM Carney has a plan for renovating 24 Sussex Drive.  Tod Maffin made an interesting Short about the building and the plan:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shorts video code

Carney says he will not live at 24 Sussex himself. “I may not look like it, but my kids are already grown.”

Of course, Poilievre is whining, and that pisses me off:

“On Thursday, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said Mr. Carney had not consulted him on plans for 24 Sussex.

‘I just don’t think about it at all,’ he said.”

That’s because he will never, ever, live there.

Mulcair: I was a bit shocked to hear Pierre Poilievre mumble his disapproval [of restoring 24 Sussex] … But the same Pierre Poilievre … lives at Stornaway with its dozens of rooms. And it is completely free for Mr. Poilievre and his family. And they’re well taken care of in there.

MacEachern: Pierre Poilievre doesn’t take advice. You see Andrew Scheer out today on 24 Sussex. You put out somebody who’s lived in not one, but two official residents to criticize the prime minister. The lad’s not for helping.

All the Conservative smear campaigns against Carney really piss me off too – just profoundly dishonest. Here’s another one:

Next, I must confess I had forgotten about this story – what has happened to these women really pisses me off.

Canada should throw its support behind them:

3 judges with the International Criminal Court filed a lawsuit in a US federal court against Trump and his administration, challenging the sanctions against them and calling it a “financial death penalty.”

The judges bringing the lawsuit are:

– Kimberly Prost (Canada)

– Solomy Balungi Bossa (Uganda)

– Reine Adelaide Sophie Alapini-Gansou (Benin)

Trump placed sanctions on the judges over their judicial decisions regarding investigations into war crimes by Israel and the US.

The judges argue that the sanctions are extrajudicial measures meant to punish and coerce them. They say the restrictions cut them off from banking, online platforms, travel booking, and sometimes health insurance.

This should be much bigger news.

It pisses me off to see the cowardly Republicans who pander to Trump about the 2020 election

It makes me happy to see Hunter Biden taking on the battle:

“I think that’s up to Canadians. I think Donald Trump has done more long-term damage to the status of our relationship, not only with Canada, but with all of our allies, than people fully realize.”

Hunter Biden on whether there’s been a permanent change in the Canada-US relationship.

Lets all laugh at Trump and his merry band of sycophants.
They’re very, very nervous now about the Mid-terms.

Trumpy is terrified what will happen when he loses the mid-terms.. So his last best scam is the SAVE MY ASS ACT. In the most basic terms, this is a work around to end the 19th Amendment and to prevent millions of women from being able to vote. Even the GOP isn’t interested. That’s how bad it is.

Only about a thousand people showed up to Trump’s Great America State Fair on Friday and I think they’re starting to realize how much everybody dislikes Trump now.

This America 250 carnival fair thing looks deserted

Johnson is terrified

Johnson: If we lose the midterms, these Democrats will turn every committee of Congress into an investigative body, and they’ll go after the president’s family, the cabinet, his donors, friends, half of you in this room will be targeted. I run the protection program. We’ll take care of you.

And now the United Nations is going to investigate the ICE Gestapo detentions

The United Nations is calling for independent investigations after at least 50 people have died in ICE custody since President Trump began his second term.

The death rate is higher than it’s been in over a decade, and this year is already on track to be worse than 2025.

This is unconscionable.

Next, it makes me very happy to see Ukraine winning against Russia. They’re taking back the Crimea, plus there is talk now about an overthrow of the Putin regime. Every day the news is getting better:

Another sign of Putin’s mounting troubles: Former military officer Alexander Lunin, in a Thursday Instagram message to Putin, warned the Russian leader that there would be “an armed uprising” if Putin did not tell “the truth” about the war in Ukraine in a “live-broadcast” from the Kremlin—alongside Lunin. Otherwise he added, “the army will turn its weapons against the Kremlin.”

Lunin claimed he’d been asked to “deliver a message” to Putin by (unnamed) officials in the military or security services.

The takeaway point here isn’t that a coup is necessarily imminent but that the Kremlin’s narrative of success on all fronts is being shredded by the huge casualties rates in the battlefield, the failure to make gains on the ground, Ukraine’s relentless drone strikes deep into Russia’s interior, the mounting economic fallout from the war, and the increasing crisis in Crimea.

Just a word on how bad the situation is for Russia in Crimea. The shortages caused by Ukraine’s relentless aerial attacks on the land routes that supply the peninsula as well on ferries and the fear the Kerch Bridge could be the next target has created long lines of cars waiting to cross the Kerch Bridge to reach Russia.

Good news:

Ukraine is swamping Russia’s air defenses with a growing armada of long-range drones that target refineries, port infrastructure, military industries and those air defenses themselves.

The escalating campaign is leading to restrictions on fuel sales in Russia, surging gasoline prices and regular images of black smoke clouds over parts of the country that thought the war in Ukraine was far away.
