Punch a buff frog and try not to let it hit you back with its massive tongue in the frenetic BREKEKEKEX

There’s nothing I revel in more than a game with a simple concept and committing to it as fully as possible. So, here’s BREKEKEKEX, a stylish action/3D brawler that pits you against frogs, cultists, guys on hogs, guys with buckets on their heads, “and worse.” It is mouthwateringly ridiculous; in what world does a Dragon Ball arena fighter where you fight frogs somehow pass as a good pitch? My one, at the very least.

I am not sure if I can tell you much about this world. The first character you play as appears to be a teen boy who wields a trident, a younger, hog-riding boy proceeding with him to witness a fight between said teen boy and frog. Fighting then ensues, which looks frenetic and precise. There is “no hard lock-on targeting,” instead you have to be conscious of where you swing your weapon when facing your opponent. You’ve nothing to defend yourself with either, leaving your only option as skillful control over your every movement, which seems like a challenge when facing off against a frog that can whack you with its tongue.

There will apparently be multiple playable characters, all with their own styles of movement, available weapons, and combat options, encouraging you to learn how each of them function. The game’s Steam page also makes it clear this isn’t an RPG, so there’s no skills to unlock or stats to grind, it’s all about you and the frogenemy in front of you. I’m honestly quite pleased to see an arena fighter taken with so much sincerity and care. It’s a genre that often gets pushed to the side because of its sort of punching a meatbag vibe, so it’s nice to see one of these go all in on the weirdness and skill-oriented combat.

BREKEKEKEX (a name I don’t fully understand) doesn’t have a release date just yet, but it is available to wishlist on Steam.
