How The F-4 Phantom's Failures Forged The F-15, F-16, & Top Gun



In the early stages of the Cold War, the US Navy (USN) required a high-speed, all-weather aircraft to protect its carrier battle groups from Soviet bombers equipped with anti-ship missiles. Winning the design competition in 1958, McDonnell Douglas built the F-4 Phantom II around the concept of an extraordinarily fast aircraft that could rapidly launch and intercept oncoming bombers from beyond visual range.
