Wildfire in Washington State Prompts Evacuation Orders

A fast-moving wildfire that broke out near Spokane, Wash., on Tuesday in dangerously dry and windy conditions has prompted evacuation orders for more than 11,000 people, officials said.

The fire, northeast of the city, was about 230 acres and 10 percent contained on Wednesday morning, according to the state Department of Natural Resources.
Spokane County Fire District 9 said on social media on Tuesday night that aircraft would return to fight the blaze, which the authorities are calling the Upriver Fire, on Wednesday morning.

Warm, dry, breezy weather was in the forecast on Wednesday, but the winds were not expected to be as strong as they were on Tuesday. Winds are expected to decrease further on Thursday.

The fire was threatening a densely populated area, Matthew Vinci, the district’s fire chief, said at a news conference on Tuesday afternoon. He said the fire was very dangerous because it had a lot of fuel and could move rapidly because of strong winds.

Some structures had been lost, but the exact damage was not yet clear, Chief Vinci said. There were no confirmed injuries because of the fire, he said.

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office said detectives and investigators on Wednesday found what appeared to be human remains at a house that was completely burned.

The Weather Service said that breezy winds, combined with low humidity and dry fuels, created conditions that were conducive to wildfires. Some areas were expecting winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour, and gusts of up to 40 miles per hour, it warned.

Gov. Bob Ferguson of Washington said on social media on Tuesday that he had requested a fire management assistance declaration from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which would provide the state with federal funds to fight the fire. The agency said on Wednesday that it had approved a grant to help the state cover firefighting costs.

Qasim Nauman contributed reporting.
