Man United open door to Rashford return as Barcelona permanent buy option expires

When Barcelona signed Marcus Rashford from Manchester United on a season-long loan ahead of the 2025/26 season, they negotiated a €30 million purchase option in the deal.

The Englishman had a career revival at the Spotify Camp Nou and established himself as an important player for Hansi Flick, with his goal contribution numbers proving quite impressive.

Rashford had hoped to stay at Barça, but the Catalan club chose not to activate the purchase option, which is set to expire today, 15 June.

Manchester United ready to welcome him back

According to AS, Manchester United are now leaving the door open for Rashford to return.

The signing of Anthony Gordon at Barcelona has changed the picture completely. The Blaugrana no longer see the left-wing position as an urgent need, making Rashford’s permanent arrival much harder to justify.

The salary issue was another important factor. Rashford was willing to accept a significant pay cut to stay, but even that may not be enough given Barça’s current priorities.

Meanwhile, new Manchester United permanent manager Michael Carrick does not view the forward’s comeback negatively, especially after a season in which he showed at Barcelona that he remains a high-level attacker.

Carrick has already spoken with Rashford about the possibility of staying at Old Trafford. The player is still under contract with United until 2028, which gives the English club control over his next step.

Among other European clubs, Bayern Munich have shown interest, but that has cooled in recent times.

Barcelona’s decision is understandable

Barcelona’s stance in this Rashford situation is very much understandable, albeit a bit harsh.

Rashford did very well, wanted to stay and showed commitment to the club. He was willing to wait for Barça and shut out all other contract offers.

That said, football decisions do not always follow the logic of merit. Once Gordon arrived, Barcelona had to be careful about spending €30 million on another attacker for a similar area of the pitch.

The club have bigger needs elsewhere, especially at centre-forward. Rashford may still be appreciated internally, but appreciation is not the same as priority. Unless there is an unexpected twist, his loan spell looks set to end without a permanent deal.

It is a disappointing outcome for a player who clearly wanted the Blaugrana chapter to continue, but Barcelona appear ready to move in a different direction.
