England 171 for 6 (Jones 64, Sciver-Brunt 57, Patil 2-29) beat India 166 (Ghosh 68, Smith 3-42, Dean 2-16) by five runs
England posted 171 for 6 after being inserted at the toss, and captain Nat Sciver-Brunt – in much need of some batting time – produced a 45-ball 57 that held the first innings together. She got an opportunity to start slow and then build into her innings courtesy of opener Amy Jones’ 45-ball 64, who continues her splendid form. Despite a middle-overs wobble triggered by India’s spinners, Dani Gibson struck four fours and a six in her unbeaten 12-ball cameo of 30 in the death overs to provide England with a strong finish.
India, with their captain Harmanpreet Kaur back in the team after missing the opening warm-up game, continued their experiment of giving Shafali Verma one over to start the bowling innings while Renuka Thakur conceded 44 runs. Kranti Gaud mixed her lengths, often troubling England’s batters with the fuller deliveries.
Then in the chase, Smriti Mandhana fell for 1, and the next four batters produced scores of 13, 15, 17 and 18. With batters settling in and then getting out, it was Richa Ghosh from No. 6 who dragged the game from a one-sided affair to a close one. With nine fours and two sixes, she scored 68 in 36 balls, but with six needed off three balls, she was stumped in the final over. Linsey Smith, who was bowling the 20th over, finished with a three-wicket haul.
Alice Capsey, not Jones, took the gloves for England in the run chase, a move to acclimatise their back-up keeper. Jemimah Rodrigues, Lauren Bell, Arundhati Reddy, Sophia Dunkley and Heather Knight were some squad members across both teams who were rested for this fixture.
Both teams now move to Birmingham for their respective tournament openers. England play Sri Lanka (June 12) while India take on Pakistan (June 14), both at Edgbaston.
Australia 132 for 4 (Voll 77*, Mooney 34, Joseph 1-6) beat West Indies 131 (Dottin 46, Gardner 2-17, Hamilton 2-19) by six wickets
Georgia Voll scored an unbeaten 77 off 48 balls as Australia defeated West Indies by six wickets in the warm-up fixture in Cardiff. Voll finished the 132 chase with 4, 6, 4 off Jannillea Glasgow as Australia won with five overs to spare. Overall, she hit ten fours and two sixes in her knock.
The match came at a potentially greater cost for West Indies with allrounder Chinelle Henry stretchered off after falling awkwardly in the field. Henry, fielding at long-on, slipped as she charged in to take a catch after Voll had skied a ball off Afy Fletcher in the ninth over of Australia’s innings.
The extent of Henry’s injury is unknown but she is key to her team’s tournament chances with her explosive hitting, wicket-taking ability and athleticism in the field. West Indies begin their World Cup campaign against reigning champions New Zealand on Saturday in Southampton.
While Voll batted through the innings, her opening partner Beth Mooney bashed 34 off 18 deliveries to lay the foundation of the chase. Mooney retired out after dominating the 48-run opening stand, but the next highest contribution from an Australian batter was only Ashleigh Gardner’s 7.
Earlier, Australia used eight bowlers and seven of them took at least one wicket to bowl West Indies out for 131. West Indies were 109 for 4 in the 16th over, but went on to lose 6 for 22. Deandra Dottin top-scored for them with 46, but didn’t find support from other batters. Gardner and Lucy Hamilton took two wickets each, as West Indies’ highest partnership was the 45 which Dottin and Jahzara Claxton added for the fourth wicket.
