The unfortunate realization of the college football recruiting process is that commitments are never guaranteed until the pen hits the paper. Four-star cornerback Semajay Robinson was the first player from the Class of 2027 to commit to Penn State since Matt Campbell was hired and he seemed to be thrilled with his school.
Over the past few weeks his intrigue in the school has begun to wane, and since he never shut down his recruitment, people assumed he would decommit or flip his commitment. Robinson proved those people right today after Hayes Fawcett of On3 Sports announced that the cornerback now intends to start his college career with the Virginia Cavaliers. Luckily cornerback is one of the positions that the Nittany Lions have the most stock invested in going forward now that arguably the best one will be with another program next year. There were signs that Robinson wasn’t thrilled with Penn State, and now he officially moves on.
This move reduces the number of commits for next year by one, but it doesn’t sting quite as bad after the school picked up a pair of commitments yesterday. The Nittany Lions are strong contenders for a number of upcoming recruits set to make their decisions in the near future and already have one of the best 2027 classes in the country. Robinson is a tough loss, but Penn State isn’t going to let this one setback define what has been an unexpectedly great recruiting cycle.
