You’ll be able to change some parts of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation’s story, but no matter what there’s only one ending

Last week, Square Enix graced us with the revelation that the final instalment of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy is just that, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. It’ll obviously follow on from Rebirth, which ends with [REDACTED], but where it goes from there is still generally a mystery given the various changes made so far. As it turns out, you’ll be able to make a few changes yourself, except for one, important thing: the ending.

Speaking to GamesRadar, director Naoki Hamaguchi explained that Revelation will have a number of “player choices” that affect certain story beats. “As our party head into the final battle, the game is going to show the resolve that they carry within them,” he explains. “This goes without saying, but our heroes, Cloud and his companions, are beloved by a lot of fans around the world. But when we thought about that, we didn’t want to just kind of deliver a singular storytelling experience for every single player around the world. We wanted each player – each fan – to have a unique experience as they head on to the final battle.”

When it comes to that final battle, Hamaguchi notes that it’s “probably going to receive a lot of attention from our fans,” and that he thinks “a lot of fans are worrying – or just being curious – about how it’s going to play out in the end.” However it might end up, he does say that the “ending of the story is going to be a singular ending,” meaning that your choices won’t change the story’s fate ultimately. But, you might still go into the ending with different feelings compared to a friend who chose differently.

“There won’t be multiple endings that would change depending on the players’ choices, but the process of how we get there to that singular ending might be a bit different between the players based on the choices that they make throughout the game. That might mean that some players might have a different emotion as they get to the story ending, so that’s kind of the difference that they might have.”

Revelation, and the remake trilogy as a whole, will likely be a smidge polarising no matter how it ends up, and would be so whether you had any choice or not. This is Final Fantasy 7 after all, a game that has almost morphed into a biblical text for many. We’ll just have to wait and see if it remotely pulls anything off!
