First Look: Inside American Airlines’ $3 Billion, 9 Gate Expansion At Dallas-Fort Worth

American Airlines just hit its major milestone on the massive expansion at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). On Monday, the airline unveiled nine state-of-the-art new gates at the Terminal C pier that introduced the first large-scale implementation of electronic boarding gates in the industry.

Pier C at DFW is the busiest terminal in the AA operation at DFW. The multi-billion dollar modernization has been going on for the past two years, using modular construction techniques to not only upgrade the five existing gates but also add four more to the terminal. Once the full reconstruction project is complete, Terminal C will be home to 32 gates spanning more than one million square feet.

Terminal C will deliver a more spacious and comfortable environment for customers, as well as greater capacity and a more efficient building. As part of the reconstruction project, the terminal’s check-in, security, baggage handling, and customer amenities have all been completely reimagined. American’s goal is to maximize the potential of the building’s footprint from the terminal door to aircraft door.

The pier expansion is the first of three phases. In April 2024, two runways at DFW were closed to move modules of the new Pier C Terminal into position on massive rolling chassis. The preassembled structures were partially built before entering the airport environment in order to minimize the impact on operations at DFW. AA is also performing a complete reconstruction of the parking garage to accommodate the increased customer traffic expected at the new terminal.

The Terminal C pier is 52 years old and averages nearly 200 departures per day. According to AA, if it were a standalone hub, it would be the fifth-largest hub in the airline’s network. American’s Senior Vice President of DFW Operations, Jim Moses, made this comment on the project’s progress in the official press release:

“The opening of the new pier provides a preview… The expansion also arrives just in time to serve our customers during what’s going to be a landmark summer.”

American has been using two of the new C gates at DFW, C33 and C34, for a couple of months, according to what Jim Moses told MSN News. The first gates were introduced early to begin training team members in the new electronic boarding environment. The other gates are expected to be phased into flight operations in the near future as well.

Beyond the upgrades to the systems, there are sofa-like seats and power stations at every seat for customers in the waiting areas. Opening up the pier area will allow the airline to begin closing some of the lower C gates to start the next phase of construction.

This project was used as an opportunity by AA to trial the modular construction method of building sections off-site and transporting them across the airfield. It took approximately two weeks to complete six separate sections and move them across the airfield overnight. Even during the construction, American has been flying almost 200 daily departures from DFW. The airline accounts for 80% of the market share at the Texas airport.

Smart technology and energy efficiency are two of the hallmarks of the Terminal C pier expansion as American ramps up for an expected 100 million annual passengers at DFW. New sustainable window technology will adapt to sun levels throughout the day to not only provide a comfortable balance between light and warmth but also improve power efficiency.

Founded in 1926, American Airlines is hitting its historic centennial milestone this year. The opening of the first phase of the Terminal C expansion coincides with this momentous year in AA’s history. Terminal C has already been a proving ground for new construction methods and will continue to introduce new technologies like the electric central utility plant.

The eCUP replaces antiquated steam piping to use 100% renewable energy for hot water systems. Paired with paperless boarding gates to reduce waste, power-saving smart lighting, and dynamic glass, among other eco-friendly upgrades, the new terminal will help AA and DFW slash their carbon footprint as it drives toward a net-zero carbon goal.
