Why Emirates’ 8,810-Mile Dubai To Auckland Flight Is Actually A UK & India Route

Dubai-based Emirates currently operates 16 daily services to its most important market within its global network, the United Kingdom. The second-most important market for the airline within its network is India, with the carrier serving nine destinations in the country. These only account for a portion of the airline’s overall network, which consists of over 140 destinations across 80 countries.

That being said, the contribution of the UK and India’s networks and passenger demand to the airline’s overall operations is far more significant than any other market. For instance, these two markets contribute significantly to the airline’s wider Australia and New Zealand market.

Airline’s Hub & Spoke Operating Model

Emirates’ success and global connectivity can be attributed to its ability to operate a hub-and-spoke business model out of its hub at Dubai International Airport (DXB). Due to the geographic advantage that the airport offers, with DXB being located at the crossroads between Asia, Europe, and Africa, Emirates can harness this and provide one-stop services connecting all corners of the world.

A 2025 report by OAG indicates that 66% of the airline’s passengers in 2024 used DXB as a connecting point, rather than a point of origin or destination for their journey. Apart from being a convenient connecting point, Emirates’ ability to strategically schedule its departure and arrival flights to different global markets provides passengers with seamless connectivity. While an itinerary with a stopover is always more time-consuming than direct services, Emirates has always been able to remain competitive by offering comfort and luxury on board its aircraft, regardless of the class of travel.

This has always been a point of attraction for passengers, and is more so over the past few years, since Emirates embarked on a historic billion-dollar cabin retrofit program. This not only modernizes the cabins of the airline’s existing aircraft but also introduces more capacity within the airline’s extremely popular premium economy travel segment, subsequently increasing product consistency.

EK’s Largest Capacity Market – The UK

The Dubai-based super connector currently operates 16 daily frequencies across eight UK gateways. The largest portion of these frequencies and capacity can be attributed to London, which sees nine daily services across the three major airports. For the month of June, London Heathrow Airport (LHR) receives five daily flights, followed by London Gatwick Airport (LGW) receiving three daily services, and London Stansted Airport (STN) receiving a daily service.

It is worth noting that the airline was originally meant to operate 20 daily services this summer, but due to the ongoing regional conflict, certain services are not operating this month, while a few other services see smaller equipment deployed. That being said, the airline’s booking engine at the time of writing does show that all 20 services will be operating from July onwards.

The increase in capacity and frequencies will be particularly noticeable within the airline’s London operations, with daily frequencies increasing to 12 across three airports, and more Airbus A380s and Boeing 777-300ERs being deployed across LHR, LGW, and STN. The fourth service resumption would be the second daily service to Birmingham International Airport (BHX).

Second-Largest Market In Terms Of Capacity – India

Much like the UK, India remains an extremely important market for the airline, with the carrier operating services to nine Indian destinations, while offering connections to more destinations via its sister carrier, flydubai. However, when focusing on Emirates’ sole operations, the carrier operates between 23 and 25 flights daily to nine destinations across India.

Despite higher frequencies, the airline’s capacity deployed to and from India is lower than that of the UK, because the airline utilizes smaller aircraft. This is done to remain within the capacity limits outlined in the bilateral air service agreement with India. Unlike the airline’s UK operations for June, Emirates’ services to and from India are operating as normal. The following are the airline’s operations to and from India:

While India is a market that feeds a lot of European and North American routes for Emirates, there is also considerable demand to the Australasia region as well. Furthermore, because of the high numbers of Indians within the Middle East, quite a lot of traffic also flies purely between the Dubai – India market, without any onward connections.

UK & India Feed Emirates’ Australasia Network

According to the airline’s data, the two markets mentioned above significantly contribute to the passenger demand on the airline’s flights to Australia and New Zealand. The airline’s high-frequency and capacity operations to these markets are not to serve the direct market itself, but to harness the connecting demand from these markets, to efficiently serve other routes within the airline’s network.

That being said, of course, there are other European, African, Middle Eastern, and Asian markets, which also feed the airline’s Australia & New Zealand services. Much like the airline’s UK network, the carrier’s services to Australia, at the time of writing, are operating at reduced frequency and capacity. However, the carrier’s booking engine does indicate service recovery in the coming weeks. The airline serves five destinations within Australia and two within New Zealand, with the carrier’s flights to Christchurch Airport (CHC) being served as a fifth freedom service via Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD) in Australia.

The above interactive route map displays details of the airline’s Australasian operations, along with how the Indian and UK markets feed the region. While it might seem odd to backtrack from India and connect via Dubai, it is worth keeping in mind that direct services between Australia and India are very limited at the moment.

Meanwhile, Emirates is able to offer varying itineraries due to the high frequencies the carrier operates within these markets. Furthermore, the onboard products and experiences associated with the Emirates brand are definitely contributing factors that pull the passengers from the competition.

Fleet Upgrades And Cabin Retrofits

As is the norm, airlines usually have to plan well ahead when it comes to their future fleet strategy and network expansion. Emirates is no exception. With over 270 widebody aircraft currently in its fleet, Emirates has a strong global presence, with an extensive network that sees short-haul service lasting just under an hour, all the way to ultra-long haul services often exceeding 17 hours of flight time.

That being said, the airline is looking to expand operations, with over 350 widebody aircraft on order. The majority of these aircraft are the Boeing 777-9, which is still pending certification and is not expected to enter service until 2027. With significant delays on the 777-9 program, the airline chose to embark on an industry-leading cabin-retrofit program, which would see over 200 of its existing A380s and the 777s receive new cabins and onboard upgrades.

Thus far, the airline has retrofitted 95 of its aircraft, and is expecting to complete cabin retrofits on over a dozen more aircraft by the end of the year. The airline’s fleet is also complemented by the growing number of A350s the airline has been taking delivery of. These aircraft are delivered with the airline’s latest cabins, and therefore, Emirates can now offer better cabin consistency, with the latest products, along with the popular premium economy cabins, on around half its fleet.

Furthermore, in recent months, the airline has also hinted it is working on brand-new first class, along with a new suite-style business class product, and even new economy class seats, which will be debuted eventually on upcoming aircraft types such as the 777-9.

A New Hub For Emirates Under Works

DWC Future Plans by Dubai Airports Credit: Dubai Airports

The airline’s hub, DXB, has consistently been the busiest international airport for several years. However, it is approaching capacity. With Emirates still expecting over 350 new widebody aircraft, along with flydubai also expecting a considerable number of new aircraft, the existing facility would not be able to handle the expansion of the two carriers.

This is why, a few years ago, plans were unveiled for the expansion project of the second airport based in Dubai – Al Maktoum International Airport, which is also known as Dubai World Central Airport (DWC). While the current DXB facility handles close to 90 million passengers per year, upon completion of the expansion of DWC, the airport is anticipated to have handling capacity in excess of 260 million passengers per annum. The first phase of the project is expected to be completed in 2034, at which point, the airport will have a capacity of up to 150 million passengers.

Upon completion of the first phase, Emirates (and the whole of DXB operations) is expected to shift to DWC. The access to a brand-new hub, with significantly higher passenger capacity, will allow Emirates to further expand its network. In addition to offering luxurious flight experiences across its global network, the airline, with its new hub, will also be able to offer elevated ground experiences in Dubai.
