Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello is making his return to comics for the first time in 14 years, and he’s joining forces with Arrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim and Spawn artist Szymon Kudrański. That’s the star-studded creative team behind Leviathan Freedom, which delivers a sci-fi-flavored reimagining of the life of Civil War-era soldier and politician Robert Smalls.
IGN can exclusively debut a new preview of this Comixology Originals series. Get a closer look in the slideshow gallery below:
As mentioned, Leviathan Freedom is inspired by the life of Robert Smalls, a slave who escaped captivity by stealing a Confederate ship. Smalls’ heroism helped convince President Lincoln to allow African-American soldiers to serve in the Union Army. Here’s the official summary of Leviathan Freedom:
In Leviathan Freedom, the galaxy is divided by civil war. And the profound human cost of conflict is felt not in the war rooms but by the Doldrums, the laborer caste essential for the war machine – until one man decides to stand against it.
“For as long as I can remember, I’ve been on a mission to unearth the stories of revolutionaries — the fighters, the visionaries, the ones history either buries or sanitizes beyond recognition,” Morello said in a statement. “Their courage, defiance and unwavering pursuit of justice, often in the face of seemingly impossible odds, have shaped the world, even if their names are too often left out of the narrative. Robert Smalls is one of those heroes. The idea of taking his revolutionary spirit and launching it into the cosmos feels like a perfect extension of his fight.”
The first chapter of Leviathan Freedom will debut on Comixology and Amazon on June 16. You can preorder the book here.
