World War 3 Servers Shutting Down Soon

The free-to-play military FPS World War 3 is going offline. Developer New Generation Games has announced that “after careful consideration,” the studio will end support for the game and close the servers very soon.

The multiplayer servers will be taken offline on August 3, 2026, after which the game will not be playable.

“This was not an easy decision. You have supported us throughout the years and we want to thank everyone who played World War 3, shared feedback, reported issues, created content and kept the community alive,” the developers said.

New Generation Games did not share any further specifics regarding the upcoming server shutdown, but the closure may have something to do with the game’s player count.

The game had 49 concurrent players at its peak over the past 24 hours. Player numbers steadily declined since an all-time high of 11,792 in September 2022, according to data from SteamDB. World War 3 was originally released in 2018.

A free-to-play tactical shooter, World War 3 takes players to places like Warsaw, Berlin, and Moscow, featuring all manner of guns, vehicles, and gadgets.

World War 3 shutting down is just the latest example of a live-service game calling it quits.

Many big releases have failed to catch on and ended up shutting down, joining the live-service graveyard. Concord and Highguard are two examples, and Hawked, a shooter similar to Fortnite, will also close its servers later this year.
