Today, the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, President of the King’s Privy Council for Canada and Minister responsible for Canada-U.S. Trade, Intergovernmental Affairs, Internal Trade and One Canadian Economy, and the Honourable Janice Charette, Chief Trade Negotiator to the United States, met with representatives of the North American automobile industry from the Canadian Vehicles Manufacturers’ Association and the American Automotive Policy Council.

They discussed the importance of maintaining a strong and dynamic North American auto sector as engagements continue for the upcoming Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) joint review. They noted the challenges associated with U.S. tariffs on autos and auto parts and the need to work together to support continued growth and opportunity in the sector.

Participants outlined key priorities for the review, including supporting investment, strengthening manufacturing across the region and ensuring the industry remains competitive in a rapidly changing global environment. They emphasized the shared ambition to reinforce North America’s position as a global leader in the automotive sector and to support innovation across the industry.

Minister LeBlanc and Chief Trade Negotiator Charette underscored the importance of continued collaboration between governments and industry in the lead-up to the review. Participants highlighted the opportunity to build on this work to support good jobs on both sides of the border and ensure the auto sector continues to contribute to a stronger, more resilient North American economy.
