Alaska Airlines is significantly expanding its airport experience with the opening of a new 14,000-square-foot (1,301-square-meter) lounge at Portland International Airport (PDX) and has plans for an even larger flagship facility in 
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA). The investments come as the carrier continues to grow its international footprint and compete more aggressively for premium travelers, a segment where lounges have become increasingly important in shaping customer loyalty and travel choices.
The Portland lounge, opening on June 4, represents one of Alaska’s largest recent investments in customer-facing infrastructure, while the airline’s planned Seattle project will raise the bar even further. Together, the developments underscore Alaska’s efforts to align its ground experience with its expanding network, which now includes long-haul international destinations across Europe and Asia.
Alaska’s new Portland lounge spans approximately 14,000 square feet, nearly doubling the size of the previous facility. The space can accommodate more than 230 guests and features a range of amenities designed for both business and leisure travelers, including private work areas, a full-service bar, premium seating options, and locally inspired food and beverage offerings.
The project represents an investment of nearly $18 million and arrives at a time when Portland is becoming an increasingly important market for the airline. Alaska now operates more than 100 daily departures from PDX and expects to offer roughly 50% more seats from the airport this fall compared with two years ago, highlighting the scale of its expansion in the region.
The lounge’s design also takes advantage of the airport’s recently renovated terminal, incorporating expansive views and Pacific Northwest-inspired elements throughout the space. The combination of increased capacity and upgraded amenities is intended to better serve a growing number of travelers passing through the airport each day. Seattle’s Future Flagship Will Eclipse the Portland Facility
While the Portland lounge is substantial, Alaska’s planned Seattle flagship is set to become the largest lounge in the airline’s network by a considerable margin. Scheduled to open in late 2027, the facility will exceed 41,000 square feet (3,809 square meters) and provide seating for approximately 700 guests across two levels.
The lounge is expected to include features typically associated with major international carriers, including multiple bars, shower suites, enhanced dining options, dedicated areas for premium international passengers, and expansive views of both the airfield and the Olympic Mountains. Once completed, it will be nearly three times larger than the newly opened Portland facility.
The project will be located within SEA’s expanded C Concourse, reinforcing the airport’s role as the center of Alaska’s operations. The size and scope of the investment reflect the airline’s confidence in Seattle as a long-term gateway for both domestic and international travel.

Lounge Expansion Supports International Growth Strategy
The investments in Portland and Seattle coincide with Alaska’s broader push into long-haul international markets. In recent months, the airline has launched new nonstop routes from Seattle to London, Rome, and Reykjavík, complementing existing service to Tokyo and Seoul.
As Alaska expands its international network, premium ground facilities are becoming a more important part of the overall travel experience. Lounges play a key role in attracting high-value travelers, particularly those flying in premium cabins or connecting on long-haul routes, where comfort and convenience can influence purchasing decisions.
The airline’s future lounge roadmap extends beyond Portland and Seattle. Alaska has also announced plans for a new lounge in San Diego and an expanded facility in Honolulu, both targeted for early 2028. Taken together, the projects represent one of the most ambitious lounge expansion programs in the carrier’s history and signal its intention to compete more directly with larger United States network airlines in the premium travel segment.
