What’s on the agenda for the House and Senate committees today.
Newly installed Parliamentary Budget Officer Annette Ryan will get the chance to air her thoughts — and, at least potentially, concerns — over the proposed budgetary allotments for her office during a back-and-forth with GOVERNMENT OPERATIONS AND ESTIMATES members before the committee moves behind closed doors to work on its draft report to the House of Commons on the ongoing expenditure review process. (11 a.m.)
Over at PROCEDURE AND HOUSE AFFAIRS, MPs are set to begin the final phase of their House-assigned assessment of the government’s pitch to update Canada’s election laws, with officials from the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Commissioner of Elections and Privy Council expected to be at the table to field any questions that come up during clause-by-clause. (11 a.m.)
Meanwhile, ACCESS TO INFORMATION, PRIVACY AND ETHICS members are booked in for another round of debate on Conservative MP Michael Barrett’s proposal to require Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office to provide the committee with monthly reports on the “application of (his) conflict of interest screen,” which, if adopted, would also order the production of all documents related to his travel since taking office. (3:30 p.m.)
INTERNATIONAL TRADE members have blocked off an hour to continue their ongoing examination of the “forthcoming” review of the Canada – U.S. — Mexico trade pact during a panel discussion with representatives of the Canadian Meat Council, Canadian Coalition of Aluminum Extruders and White Birch Paper before shifting their focus to the “international trade-related activities of certain federal entities” with senior officials with the Canadian Commercial Corporation and Invest In Canada. (11 a.m.)
Also this morning:
- CANADIAN HERITAGE members will explore the “state of creative and performance spaces across Canada” with representatives of the Globe Theatre, Regroupement des festivals régionaux artistiques indépendants and Scènes de Musique Alternatives du Québec, as well as former Canadian Live Music Association CEO Erin Benjamin and the Falun Dafa Association of Canada. (8:15 a.m.)
- INDUSTRY members hear more expert testimony on the “opportunities, risks and regulation of AI in Canada’s strategic industries” from the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada, among others. (11 a.m.)
- AGRICULTURE AND AGRI-FOOD members are still reviewing the “business risk management programs” within the agricultural sector. (11 a.m.)
Later this afternoon, representatives of the Canadian Gas Association, Electric Mobility Canada, Electricity Canada, Nova Scotia Independent System Operator and the Inuvialuit Petroleum Corporation will share their respective perspectives on “electrification, energy self-sufficiency and domestic energy security” with NATURAL RESOURCES members. (3:30 p.m.)
Global Magnitsky Justice Campaign head William Browder, DisinfoWatch director Marcus Kolga and the Free Russia Foundation weigh in on Conservative MP James Bezan’s backbench bid to strengthen the current sanction regime. (3:30 p.m.)
Elsewhere on the afternoon circuit: STATUS OF WOMEN members get a briefing on the “role and capacity of women’s shelters,” as well as “transitional housing to support women and girls,” from advocacy groups. (3:30 p.m.)
Rounding out the roster, FINANCE members will hold another half-day session as pre-budget consultations continue. (8:15 a.m.)
