As the government’s bid to overhaul the federal election law to boost protection against foreign interference — including new limits on non-citizen participation in nomination and leadership races and new requirements to protect private information — continues to work its way through the House of Commons, the Senate LEGAL AND CONSTITUTIONAL AFFAIRS committee has blocked off an hour to quiz its sponsor, Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon, as it kicks off its preliminary review of the draft legislation, with Chief Electoral Officer Stéphane Perrault and Canada Elections Commissioner Caroline Simard also expected to be at the table. Also this afternoon: BANKING, COMMERCE AND THE ECONOMY members will get the chance to question Housing and Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson about the proposed mandate and operations of Build Canada Homes as part of its pre-study of legislation expected to clear the House of Commons before the summer recess. Back on the House of Commons circuit, NATIONAL DEFENCE members get an update on the “impact” of the newly launched Defence Industrial Strategy during a panel discussion with representatives of the Aerospace Industries Association of Canada, Alliance of Canadian Defence Companies, U15 Canada and Aero Montreal. Over at CITIZENSHIP AND IMMIGRATION, MPs continue to explore the “provincial distribution of asylum seekers” across Canada with academic experts, refugee advocates and other expert witnesses. (4:30 p.m.)

Rounding out the roster, Conservative MP Luc Berthold heads to JUSTICE AND HUMAN RIGHTS to present his pitch to allow courts to impose sentences that include addiction treatment programs. (4:30 p.m.)
