Pre-budget consultations, Canada-Taiwan trade and election law changes on the agenda


What’s on the agenda for the House and Senate committees today.

After launching their traditional pre-budget consultations yesterday, FINANCE members are set to hold another extended meeting tonight to hear from more industry representatives, economists and experts during back-to-back roundtable discussions with the Aerospace Industries Association of Canada, Alberta Cattle Feeders’ Association, Canadian Institute of Steel Construction, Helium Developers Association of Canada, The Transition Accelerator, Canadian Craft Brewers Association and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, among others. (3:30 p.m.)

Earlier in the day, representatives of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Canada will update INTERNATIONAL TRADE members on “trade-related cooperation” between Canada and Taiwan before the committee shifts its focus back to the upcoming review of the Canada – U.S. — Mexico trade pact with representatives of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association and Pacific Manufacturing Association of Canada. (11 a.m.)

Over at PROCEDURE AND HOUSE AFFAIRS, MPs get ready to wrap up their lightning-round review of proposed changes to the federal election laws with a final round of expert testimony from lawyer Gerald Chipeur, Democracy Watch co-founder Duff Conacher and Cornell University’s Peter Loewen. (11 a.m.)

Also this morning:

  • NATURAL RESOURCES members will take a closer look at Canada’s “electrification, energy self-sufficiency and domestic energy security” with Canada Energy Regulator chief economist Darren Christie, along with a full contingent of departmental officials from Natural Resources, Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs and Environment and Climate Change Canada, as well as Trottier Energy Institute scientific director Normand Mousseau and HEC Montreal professor Pierre-Olivier Pineau. (11 a.m.)
  • STATUS OF WOMEN members examine the “role and capacity of women’s shelters and transitional housing” with Sagesse Domestic Violence Prevention Society CEO Andrea Silverstone and Women’s Shelters Canada executive director Anuradha Dugal before heading behind closed doors to work on their report on “antifeminist ideology.” (11 a.m.)
  • AGRICULTURE AND AGRI-FOOD members resume their ongoing study of “business risk management programs” within the agriculture sector with Ontario Federation of Agriculture senior economist Ben LeFort and Conseil pour le développement de l’agricutlure du Québec general director Sarah Delisle. (11 a.m.)

Later this afternoon, GOVERNMENT OPERATIONS AND ESTIMATES members will get an update on ‘Buy Canadian’ policy from senior departmental officials with Public Works and Government Services and Treasury Board Secretariat. (3:30 p.m.)

Meanwhile, newly re-elected Liberal MP Tatiana Auguste appears before ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT to make the case for her backbench call to develop a “national strategy respecting flood and drought forecasting.” (3:30 p.m.)

Elsewhere on the afternoon circuit, FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND INTERNATIONAL TRADE members circle back to their review of Canada’s Indo-Pacific strategy with academic experts, as well as Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada vice-president Vina Nadjibulla. (3:30 p.m.)

Rounding out the rotation, the SPECIAL JOINT COMMITTEE ON THE EXERCISE OF POWERS UNDER THE BUILDING CANADA ACT will gather behind closed doors to work on a draft report.
