Billed as the story of America, Hamilton explores the life of Alexander Hamilton across the American Revolutionary War, his time as an aide to George Washington, his career, and the infamous duel against Aaron Burr that ultimately cost him his life. The story is told through a fusion of musical styles, including hip hop, rap, jazz, and more, to create a unique experience. This version of the musical is a compilation of several of the filmed performances from the 2016 run of Hamilton with its original principal cast. Major movie studios entered into a bidding war for the rights, with Disney eventually securing them in 2020 for $75 million.
The original plan was for Hamilton to be released theatrically in 2021, but the Covid-19 pandemic saw plans change and the show was later released on Disney+ for the 2020 July 4 weekend. As part of the musical’s 10th anniversary celebrations, Hamilton was released theatrically in the US and Canada in 2025, and it quickly earned rave reviews.
For more Blu-ray reviews, there’s a whole lot to choose from currently. You can keep the music flowing when Michael Jackson moonwalks onto Blu-ray, Danny Boyle’s cult-classic zombie thriller 28 Days Later is getting its first 4K release, and you can watch Michael Douglas have a really bad day in Falling Down.
