Pakistan were dismissed for 358 in 97.2 overs, with left-arm spinner Taijul Islam doing the bulk of the damage.

Pakistan resumed day five with faint hopes, and for a brief period Mohammad Rizwan and Sajid Khan gave those hopes some substance. After a short rain delay in the first session, the pair put together a 54-run partnership that nudged the total past 350. Sajid Khan contributed a handy 28 off 36 deliveries with five boundaries before Taijul broke the stand.

Rizwan, who had been Pakistan’s most stubborn resistance throughout with a composed 94 off 166 balls including 10 fours, was then removed by Shoriful Islam to leave Pakistan nine wickets down. Taijul completed the rout by dismissing Khurram Shahzad for a duck, wrapping up the match and sealing the historic result.

For nearly half a century, Pakistan was virtually invincible at home. However, their home fortress has been completely breached four times, including a neutral series where they were the designated “home” team.

It is worth noting that Pakistan lost 1-0 in a single-match series against England in 1954 and Australia in 1972, but ICC and cricketing statisticians generally require a minimum of two matches to officially classify a series defeat as a “whitewash.”

The Cricket News Opinion: Pakistan’s away cricket is in a structural crisis

The series defeat to Bangladesh will raise alarm bells in Lahore. Eight whitewashes away from home, five of them in Australia alone, point to something far deeper than a temporary slump. Pakistan’s top-order fragility against pace and movement, combined with an inability to adapt tactically on foreign pitches, has become a recurring theme that coaching changes and player rotations have failed to address.

Bangladesh deserve enormous credit for their discipline and planning across both Tests, but Pakistan’s cricket administration cannot look at twelve whitewashes in the record books and continue treating each one as an isolated incident. Something structural needs to change, and it needs to change soon.
