Minister Anand meets with counterpart in Latvia


May 19, 2026 – Riga, Latvia – Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today met with Baiba Braže, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia, during a visit to Riga.

Minister Anand reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to Lativa’s and NATO Allies’ security through Canada’s leadership in the NATO Multinational Brigade Latvia and the renewal of Operation REASSURANCE until 2029.

The ministers discussed their countries’ ongoing support for Ukraine and the importance of keeping up collective pressure on Russia, including with coordinated sanctions against individuals and entities who support Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The ministers also discussed the upcoming NATO Summit, which will be hosted in Ankara, Türkiye, on July 7 to 8, 2026. Minister Anand reiterated the importance of the Arctic and contributions of Arctic-related knowledge and capabilities to Allied defence.

The ministers agreed to remain in close contact and to continue exploring concrete ways to deepen defence‑industrial and trade interests for both countries.
