President Trump boarded Air Force One on Friday afternoon to leave Beijing as a crowd chanted and waved flags, after two days of high-stakes meetings with China’s leader, Xi Jinping.
There was no indication that the two leaders had reached any clear agreement on significant points of contention, including Taiwan, trade and the war in Iran, though they both emphasized stability.
The summit, the first U.S. presidential visit to China in almost a decade, has been closely watched for signs of whether a détente between the countries would hold. The two leaders agreed to pause a bruising trade war when they last met, in October in South Korea.
Mr. Trump told a reporter on Friday that the two leaders had made “fantastic trade deals,” while Mr. Xi said they had “established a relationship with constructive strategic stability” and called the summit a “milestone visit.”
Despite the tensions between the two countries, the summit featured lavish displays of pageantry, including an extravagant welcome ceremony and state banquet, and a visit to Zhongnanhai, the secretive compound where Mr. Xi works and lives, which few foreign leaders have seen.
