Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 3 release date officially revealed

We’re going back to Middle-earth… just not this second. Amazon announced on Monday that its mega-budget fantasy series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power would return for season 3 on Nov. 11, 2026. The Prime Video series is set during the Second Age of J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved saga (long before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy) and traces Sauron’s rise to power as he forges the rings he ultimately uses to enslave Middle-earth. The announcement also came with a new image of the Dark Lord, played by Charlie Vickers in Rings of Power.

“From the very beginning, this series has embodied the scale, ambition, and cinematic storytelling that define Prime Video’s biggest global series,” said Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television, Amazon MGM Studios. “The extraordinary response from millions of fans around the world has made it clear that this journey through Middle-earth continues to resonate, and that momentum has only grown heading into Season Three.”

Per a confirmed synopsis, Rings of Power season 3 will take a major leap forward in the show’s timeline. “Jumping forward several years from the events of Season Two, Season Three takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war, bind all peoples to his will – and at last rule all Middle-earth.”

So what does this mean for what we’ll see in season 3? By the time The Rings of Power picks up, Middle-earth will be in its “everything’s on fire now” era. The elves realize the nice magical jewelry guy was actually the Dark Lord in a wig, and Sauron responds the way any deeply normal Tolkien villain would — by launching a full military campaign across the elven realm of Eregion.

In Tolkien lore, the whole thing technically stretches across years, but the showrunners appear to be speeding things up for budget and time reasons. But in broad strokes: Sauron sacks Eregion, tortures Celebrimbor for the Rings, and sends the surviving elves scattering in every direction like fantasy evacuees fleeing the world’s worst tech startup collapse. Elrond escapes north with refugees and founds Rivendell, aka Imladris, while the dwarves of Khazad-dûm briefly show up clutch to help stop Sauron from steamrolling absolutely everybody before sealing themselves underground for several thousand years.

The go to source for most of this story is Unfinished Tales, which you may want to read up on in the few months you have before season 3 drops.

Earlier this year there were big questions of whether showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay would hae a chance to bring any of this history to screen — Rings of Power is among the most expensive television projects of all time and viewership has been rocky at best. But also, Jeff Bevos loves The Lord of the Rings and that counts for something. So season 3 is on the horizon, even if we’ll be sailing into the west a little earlier than planned.
