Antisocial media. – Cee Tee Jackson

I have to say, my relationship with Social Media has hit a rocky patch. We barely speak these days. Which is rather sad, because we used to be so much in love.

I would forever be updating my Facebook page, mainly with the usual meaningless nonsense. I never really figured out the operational mechanics for Instagram, and Tik Tok seems to be more for a younger viewing audience, but good old Facebook (and My Space, before it) were great for re-establishing and maintaining contact with old friends. In fact, you can go further back and Friends Reunited was responsible for me finding school pals from fifty years ago. (Well, it was thirty years ago, at that point.)

See, Social Media in its earlier days was a loving soul. So kind; so caring. So selfless.

Then its head was turned; tempted away from me by various interlopers who promised power and wealth.

It changed.

“It’s not you – it’s me” it whispered as if trying to make me feel better about myself. But I detected a barely concealed arrogant smirk. Social Media no longer cared.

It morphed. It’s quaint and cozy personality became something way more fickle and selfish. It started hanging out with a different crowd. This loud and brash community all sought the attention of Social Media. Realising a new-found sense of power it egged on those who craved its affection.

Followers and acolytes seeking fame and fortune became bold to the point of stupidity. Some developed narcissistic tendencies. Many became angry. They didn’t mind. So long as it pleased Social Media and made it more wealthy. More powerful.

But not me. Oh no, no, no. I can’t be doing with all that stuff. Call me Mr Cynical, but I don’t trust Social Media anymore. Especially now it’s also gotten into bed with AI.

Truth? Fake news?

Social Media – you were once such a homely and comforting friend. But you’re right … it isn’t me, it’s you!

But you, dear WordPress. You’re my friend. You can be my ‘bestie’ now if you want. But please don’t change – I love you just the way you are.

(And no! I’m NOT attaching a You Tube video of that song!) 😉
