Person shot by law enforcement near Washington monument, Secret Service says | Washington DC

An individual was shot by law enforcement officers on Monday near the Washington monument, the Secret Service said. The shooting occurred shortly after JD Vance’s motorcade passed through the area.

The individual was first identified by plainclothes officers, who said he looked suspicious and was believed to be carrying a firearm, according to Matthew Quinn, the deputy director of the Secret Service. These officers called in support from uniformed agents. When the individual saw the uniformed agents, Quinn said he fled on foot, drew his gun and fired.

“They returned fire and engaged,” Quinn said. “That individual was hit, [and] he’s since been transported to the hospital.”

Quinn declined to comment on the person’s condition. The circumstances surrounding the shooting, which took place around 15th Street and Independence Avenue, were not immediately known. Quinn said it’s unclear if Vance was a target.

One bystander, a juvenile, was also reportedly shot but didn’t sustain life-threatening injuries, said Quinn. They are receiving treatment at the hospital.

The Secret Service encouraged people to avoid the area as emergency crews responded to the shooting not far from the White House, where Donald Trump was holding a small business event.

The White House was briefly locked down as authorities investigated the incident. The Secret Service ushered journalists who were outside into the briefing room, and Trump continued his event without interruption.
