Calgary and its city manager agree to part ways as search begins for replacement

CALGARY — Calgary is on the hunt for a new city manager.

City council and chief administrative officer David Duckworth have agreed to part ways.

Duckworth has been in the role since 2019 and his last day will be Dec. 1.

He was at the helm during the COVID-19 pandemic and a pair of major water main bursts that have led to increased scrutiny of the city’s water systems.

While an independent panel report into one of the water main ruptures laid no blame, Duckworth said at the time that he and his team took personal responsibility for the city’s services.

The city’s chief operating officer Stuart Dalgleish also announced his retirement and is set to exit his role in June.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published April 29, 2026.
