April 28, 2026 – Ottawa, Ontario – Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs, spoke with her Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates.

During their discussions, the ministers noted various aspects of relations between Canada and the Kingdom of Morocco. They reaffirmed their commitment to renewed bilateral relations based on mutual respect, constructive dialogue and openness, as well as to working together as partners to strengthen and build new momentum in their relations.

Acknowledging the importance of the issue of Western Sahara to Morocco, Minister Anand noted the adoption of UN Security Council resolution 2797 on October 31, 2025. She affirmed Canada’s recognition of Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara as basis for a mutually acceptable solution and as a serious and credible initiative in achieving a just and lasting settlement of the conflict.

In this context, the Minister emphasized the need to reach a lasting, just and mutually acceptable political settlement in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter and relevant Security Council resolutions.

Minister Anand expressed interest in making an official visit to Morocco in the coming weeks and both ministers agreed to work towards that in order to further discuss the two countries’ relations and to deepen discussions on Western Sahara.
