Liberal democracy is in danger. The assertion is often repeated, but the nature of the danger seems to vary. Consider the great political Rorschach tests of our time: Brexit and the two elections of Donald Trump. Each was either an assertion of autonomy and liberal freedoms or a sign of illiberalism and incipient fascism, depending on your perspective.
