Ban vs NZ – 2nd ODI – Nahid Rana five-wicket haul restricts NZ to 198

New Zealand 198 (Kelly 83, Abbas 19, Rana 5-32) v Bangladesh

Nahid Rana’s five-wicket haul gave Bangladesh a great chance to level the series, as they bowled out New Zealand for 198 runs in 48.4 overs. This was Rana’s second five-wicket haul in as many ODI series, after he had taken 5 for 24 against Pakistan last month.

Rana took a wicket with the first ball of the over on three occasions on Monday. He also had an impact in all three phases of the New Zealand innings. He started with two wickets in the first powerplay, before getting one in the 29th over. He finished with two wickets in the third powerplay.

Bangladesh also had a good session as a fielding unit, often saving singles inside the circle and several fours in the deep. Wicketkeeper Litton Das took two smart takes, while Towhid Hridoy grabbed three catches, including a diving effort at long-on to take New Zealand’s last wicket in the 49th over.

Coming in at one change in the eighth over, Rana nipped out New Zealand’s first two wickets in his first two overs. He removed Henry Nicholls, New Zealand’s highest scorer in the first game, with a delivery that nipped back into the left-handed Nicholls, who was trapped lbw for 13 off 26 balls. Rana then banged one into Will Young, who tried to ride the bounce but only guided it to Soumya Sarkar at gully, having made just two runs.

Captain Tom Latham was next to go when Sarkar, playing his first ODI since October, removed him with an outside edge, nicely grasped by Litton playing his 100th ODI. The ball died on Litton who had to dive in front of him to complete the catch as Latham left for 14 off 35 balls.

Nick Kelly found Muhammad Abbas as a willing ally, as the pair rebuild the New Zealand innings in the middle overs. Abbas broke the boundary drought of 33 balls, when he edged Soumya to third-man in the 20th over. Kelly struck another in the over, before he slammed Mehidy Hasan Miraz for another cover-driven four in the following over.

Kelly then laid into Taskin Ahmed, driving him down the ground and clipping him over midwicket among his three fours in the 25th over. Kelly soon reached his fifty in the 27th over, before Nahid Rana, brought back into the attack, removed Abbas.

Litton this time took an even more impressive catch, running back towards fine-leg to gulp down Abbas’ top-edge. Abbas and Kelly added 56 runs for the fourth wicket, the best stand of the New Zealand innings.

Around this point, Kelly started to apply himself as a more aggressive batter. He moved a lot around the crease, even getting hit on his visor when he tried to hook Shoriful Islam’s length ball in the 35th over. He fell to the same bowler in his next over, caught at midwicket for 83.

Josh Clarkson became Rishad Hossain’s first wicket soon afterwards, caught at point for six, before Rana came back for his third spell, which also started with a wicket.

Rana removed Dean Foxcroft in the 43rd over, caught trying to pull him towards deep square leg where Towhid Hridoy took a good catch. His fifth came in the 46th over when he yorked Jayden Lennox for a duck, before ending his quota of ten overs with a pinpoint yorker that Nathan Smith barely kept away from the stumps.
