Gears of War film director insists “that movie will happen”

Yes, the Gears of War movie is “going to happen”.

That’s according to director David Leitch, who told Collider that there’s a “great draft [script] that’s in progress, that’s in a really great shape” and assured impatient fans that Netflix is “100 percent behind it”.

We discovered that Fall Guy director David Leitch was in talks to direct the movie adaptation of Gears of War last summer. Reporting at the time suggested Leitch was in negotiations to direct and produce the film with Kelly McCormick and their 87North production company in partnership with game developer, The Coalition. We already knew Jon Spaihts, whose Dune screenplay was nominated for an Oscar, was also on board as script writer.

Now, several months on, Leitch was happy to talk about the project in an interview for his new movie, How to Rob a Bank, confirming game developer The Coalition was “fired up”, too.

“Gears of War, I think, is going to happen. We have a great draft that’s in progress that’s in really great shape,” Lietch said.

“The studio’s more determined than ever to make it. Netflix is 100 percent behind it. The Coalition is fired up, as well. They have their game releasing this year, as well, and so it’s all lining up that that movie will happen.”

Netflix announced it had acquired the rights to adapt Gear of War into a movie in November 2022, following earlier unsuccessful attempts by New Line Cinema to get a live-action adaptation off the ground. That version, first trumpeted in 2007, had abandoned all pretence of being set in the game’s universe by 2019, when the project became permanently stuck in development hell.

People Can Fly is working with The Coalition on the next Gears of War game, Gears of War: E-Day, and learned in 2025 that John DiMiaggio and Carlos Ferro were reprising their roles as Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago. It’s expected to release later this year.
