There’s not a lot of news items about it but the BC Association of Professional Archaeologists just put out a statement regarding the new Heritage Conservation Act Transformation Project which has some concerning changes proposed that are going to decrease the ability of First Nations and professional archaeologists to mitigate damage to cultural sites. This includes completely removing intangible heritage from the act and also proposing revealing sensitive cultural databases to realtors. This seems to be going hand in hand with the DRIPA pause but it won’t be going into effect until the fall. It’s supposedly intended to streamline the process but it just seems like it’s trying to shift responsibility off of the BC government.
