Actor Charlie Cox has finally managed to play at least some of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the game he lent his vocal talents to and which ultimately landed him a Game Awards nomination for Best Performance.

As a reminder, Cox voiced Gustav in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, while Maxence Cazorla performed the motion capture. This was Cox’s first foray into the world of video game acting, and his first encounter with video game communities, many of which fell in love with Clair Obscur. The actor received so much praise and recognition for his work helping bring Gustav to life, he vowed to actually play the game one day, and now that day has come. And OK he hasn’t actually completed it yet, but he has played “a bit”.

“I’m not very good, because obviously, it’s a skill set, but I’ve played it,” Cox told GamesRadar. As to which bits he has played, that would be “the opening” where he “kind of walked around and met the people and garnered the information and all that kind of stuff”.

“My memory of video gaming probably goes up to FIFA 98,” he told explained, before saying he used to also enjoy the likes of Mario Kart and Goldeneye 007, which are solid choices. Cox noted, though, that while these games “were obviously incredibly addictive” and provided hours of entertainment, “they weren’t stories” in the same way Clair Obscur is.

“They weren’t, like, stories that were so carefully carved out and created over the course of a game with the level of detail and the way in which information is received. It’s not just all spelled out – you discover these things as you go on through the game,” Cox said. He added that modern storytelling in games is like “a movie you get to participate in”.

Earlier this year, Cox revealed he is set to star in another video game following the success of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Cox stopped short of revealing which game he is going to be part of next, but did say he will be “much more involved” with this one, and it will require “more work” from him, suggesting he may be doing the motion capture performance as well as the voice over when the time comes.
