SA Women vs IND Women 2026, SA-W vs IND-W 1st T20I Match Report, April 17, 2026

South Africa 158 for 4 (Wolvaardt 51, Dercksen 44*) beat India 157 for 7 (Harmanpreet 47*, Khaka 3-16) by six wickets

South Africa completed their fifth-highest successful T20I chase and took the early lead in the five-match series against India. On a warm Durban evening, South Africa pulled India back from 119 for 2 in the 15th over to limit them to a score of under 160 and reached the target with five balls to spare.
Put into bat, India’s opening pair put on 46, then Jemimah Rodrigues and Harmanpreet Kaur shared a third-wicket stand of 71 off 51 balls to give India a foundation. They’ll be disappointed that the middle order didn’t build on that as they scored just 33 runs in the last five overs, and lost four wickets. Ayabonga Khaka and Tumi Sekhukhune shared five wickets between them while left-arm spinner Nonukulekho Mlaba, on her home ground, finished with 1 for 30.
With a required run-rate of under eight an over, South Africa could pace the chase fairly comfortably. Laura Wolvaardt anchored her side with 51 off 39 balls and put on a 52-run third-wicket partnership with Annerie Dercksen, who saw the team home. Dercksen was unbeaten on 44 from 34.
India’s 14 wides – their second-highest tally in T20Is – will concern them, especially when juxtaposed with the dropped catches at the death but they have the opportunity to turn things around in a day game on Sunday at the same venue.

Shafali vs the short ball

It only took four deliveries in the match for Shafali Verma to show her power. Sune Luus, opening the bowling, landed it in the slot, Shafali got under it and launched it over mid-off. Wrong length. Khaka, who shared the new ball, immediately tested Shafali with the short ball, and Shafali almost came up short. She was cramped for room trying to pull but Luus at mid-on, despite a dive forward, could not hold on. Just when South Africa thought they had found Shafali’s soft spot, she adjusted, got inside the line of the next one and sent it through short fine leg for four. Shafali raced to 34 off 17 balls – a strike rate of 200 – and her highest in five games. But when Sekhukhune dug it in short, Shafali was early through the shot and mishit to Tazmin Brits at midwicket. India were 46 for 1 after five overs.

Khaka keeps it under control

One breakthrough early on became two thanks to Khaka when Smirit Mandhana went after a full wide ball and sent it to Wolvaardt at extra cover. India were 48 for 2 after the first six. Khaka’s figures after her first two overs were 1 for 9. She was brought back after Sekhukhune broke the Rodrigues-Harmanpreet stand and gave Richa Ghosh a hit-me ball. It was on middle and leg and Richa slogged to deep midwicket but didn’t get enough and Anneke Bosch took a well-judged catch. With only two boundaries between the 16th and 19th over, India needed to accelerate but against Khaka at the death, that would be tough. She started the final over with a slower ball and Arundhati Reddy was deceived. She hit it to Nadine de Klerk on the long-off boundary. Khaka’s final analysis: 4-0-16-3. She remains the leading T20I wicket-taker among players from Full Member nations this year:

Laura leads from the front

The South African captain lamented a lack of execution on their tour to New Zealand and walked the talk with her first fifty in eight T20I innings. After being moved to No. 3 at the start of the season, Wolvaardt was back to opening the batting in this match and it seems to suit her. She navigated the early departure of Luus and India securing her favoured area through the covers and found early runs behind square on the leg side. Wolvaardt asserted herself against Deepti Sharma, who she hit for three fours in her opening over: two down the ground and a sweep through short fine. Wolvaardt’s first shot of intent through the covers was in the 10th over, off N Shree Charani, and moved her to 46. Wolvaardt’s fifty came with Dercksen at the other end, ball-watching and nearly run out, but to warm applause. Her fun ended when she pulled Shreyanka Patil to deep midwicket but the hallmark of the innings was her leg l-side play. Wolvaardt scored 35 of her 51 runs on the on side.

India sloppy when it matters most

South Africa needed 16 runs off the last 18 balls, which sounds simple enough, but they carry a long tail and both Dercksen and Chloe Tryon flirted with danger. In the 18th over, she paddled a Patil ball to short fine but Renuka Singh, with dark glasses on at night, shelled it. Then in the penultimate over, Tryon hit Reddy to deep midwicket where substitute fielder Anushka Sharma lunged forward but could not hold on. In the end, India also had an over-rate penalty imposed on them and needed an extra fielder in the ring for the final over. Tryon sealed victory with a six.
