South Africa 158 for 4 (Wolvaardt 51, Dercksen 44*) beat India 157 for 7 (Harmanpreet 47*, Khaka 3-16) by six wickets
Shafali vs the short ball
Khaka keeps it under control
One breakthrough early on became two thanks to Khaka when Smirit Mandhana went after a full wide ball and sent it to Wolvaardt at extra cover. India were 48 for 2 after the first six. Khaka’s figures after her first two overs were 1 for 9. She was brought back after Sekhukhune broke the Rodrigues-Harmanpreet stand and gave Richa Ghosh a hit-me ball. It was on middle and leg and Richa slogged to deep midwicket but didn’t get enough and Anneke Bosch took a well-judged catch. With only two boundaries between the 16th and 19th over, India needed to accelerate but against Khaka at the death, that would be tough. She started the final over with a slower ball and Arundhati Reddy was deceived. She hit it to Nadine de Klerk on the long-off boundary. Khaka’s final analysis: 4-0-16-3. She remains the leading T20I wicket-taker among players from Full Member nations this year:
Laura leads from the front
The South African captain lamented a lack of execution on their tour to New Zealand and walked the talk with her first fifty in eight T20I innings. After being moved to No. 3 at the start of the season, Wolvaardt was back to opening the batting in this match and it seems to suit her. She navigated the early departure of Luus and India securing her favoured area through the covers and found early runs behind square on the leg side. Wolvaardt asserted herself against Deepti Sharma, who she hit for three fours in her opening over: two down the ground and a sweep through short fine. Wolvaardt’s first shot of intent through the covers was in the 10th over, off N Shree Charani, and moved her to 46. Wolvaardt’s fifty came with Dercksen at the other end, ball-watching and nearly run out, but to warm applause. Her fun ended when she pulled Shreyanka Patil to deep midwicket but the hallmark of the innings was her leg l-side play. Wolvaardt scored 35 of her 51 runs on the on side.
India sloppy when it matters most
South Africa needed 16 runs off the last 18 balls, which sounds simple enough, but they carry a long tail and both Dercksen and Chloe Tryon flirted with danger. In the 18th over, she paddled a Patil ball to short fine but Renuka Singh, with dark glasses on at night, shelled it. Then in the penultimate over, Tryon hit Reddy to deep midwicket where substitute fielder Anushka Sharma lunged forward but could not hold on. In the end, India also had an over-rate penalty imposed on them and needed an extra fielder in the ring for the final over. Tryon sealed victory with a six.
