S&P/TSX composite edges lower in late-morning trading, U.S. stock markets up


TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index edged lower in late-morning, weighed down by losses in the financial and utility sectors, while U.S. stock markets traded higher.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 11.32 points at 34,144.67.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 42.53 points at 48,506.25. The S&P 500 index was up 18.45 points at 7,041.40, while the Nasdaq composite was up 75.88 points at 24,091.90.

The Canadian dollar traded for 72.93 cents US compared with 72.75 cents US on Wednesday.

The June crude oil contract was up US$2.00 at US$90.13 per barrel.

The June gold contract was up US$5.70 at US$4,829.30 an ounce.
