12 Best Natural And Organic Mascara Brands (2026 Review)

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

I tested the top natural and organic mascaras that are safe to wear daily. After many workouts, crying sessions, and smudge tests, these are my favorites for a lengthening lift.

Most people carry lip products in their purse. I carry mascara.

Even though I don’t wear a lot of makeup, mascara has always been my non-negotiable. It might be a placebo, but the second I swipe a layer or two on, I feel a little bit taller and more awake. You’ll catch me throwing it on 30 seconds before a meeting, and even before a workout class for a little extra confidence at the gym.

On the weekends or for a night out, mascara is where I get dramatic. I’ve been this way since my high school prom. Instead of 2 layers, I’m spending 5 minutes layering on 5 coats. I love long lashes. They awaken my whole face without having to do much else.

When I transitioned to clean beauty in my 20s, I found great better-for-you swaps for almost everything except mascara. Most natural formulas melted off my eyes within hours, so I kept reaching for conventional brands despite knowing better. I lived by the 80/20 rule, and mascara stayed firmly in the “20” bucket.

Until now. For this guide, I tested 12 clean mascaras from conscious brands with nontoxic formulas. I gave each one a dedicated testing day, wearing it everywhere: Work-from-home days, Pilates, dance class, fancy dinners, and travel days between Los Angeles and Boston. Then I reached for my favorites over the course of a month to see which ones I kept coming back to. My lashes are mid-long and slightly curled, and my priorities were volume, length, staying power, and zero smudging or flaking. And I finally found formulas that actually perform. Good news: Clean beauty has come a long way, and there are a lot of great options now.

During my testing, two major considerations kept coming up: Staying power versus removal. You want a mascara that stays on your eyes and comes off easily, but most of the time, these factors are at odds with each other. Some came off easily with my go-to face wash from Gntl, and some needed a little extra help with a makeup remover. I used the 7-Ingredient Micellar Water from Typology on a cotton pad, and it worked perfectly.

Why should I use a nontoxic mascara?

Using nontoxic mascara can make a big difference, both for your health and for the environment. Traditional mascaras often contain chemicals like parabens, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances, which can cause irritation and, over time, potentially disrupt hormone balance. Nontoxic mascaras, on the other hand, are made with cleaner ingredients like plant-based waxes, natural pigments, and gentle conditioning agents. This means they’re safer for sensitive eyes and for people who wear contact lenses. Plus, they’re often cruelty-free and more eco-friendly, with many brands offering recyclable packaging and sustainably sourced ingredients. With nontoxic mascara, you get beautiful lashes without compromising health or values — an all-around win!

What should you look for in a nontoxic mascara?

When shopping for clean mascara, check for certifications like EWG Verified and look for brands that avoid questionable ingredients — like parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, formaldehyde and coal tar. Yes, if you can believe it, some conventional mascaras actually contain tar! While the FDA has only restricted 11 ingredients from personal care products, the best clean brands avoid thousands more. Instead, look for plant-based waxes, natural pigments, and nourishing oils that condition lashes. Beyond ingredients, consider performance and sustainability: Does it stay put, and is the brand cruelty-free with recyclable packaging?

Product: Expressionist Curling Mascara

Best For | Waterproof mascara
Natural & Organic Ingredients | EWG verified, vegan, pregnancy-friendly
Waterproof | Yes
Price | $20

Well People is one of the OG nontoxic makeup brands, with 100+ EWG-verified products. They avoid over 2,500 questionable ingredients (while the FDA only restricts 11) and are Fair Trade certified, vegan, cruelty-free, and pregnancy-friendly.

Grace’s Review | This mascara stayed put through 90 minutes of sweaty dance class and layers beautifully from natural to dramatic. The unique curved brush separates and curls without clumping. The formula uses Olive Oil to nourish lashes and vegan waxes (Carnauba and Rice) to provide hold and glossiness. My only comment is that it’s really hard to remove. It takes multiple rounds of scrubbing (but be gentle!) with makeup remover and definitely doesn’t come off with face wash alone. This is the only technically waterproof option on the guide, so it’s worth it for me. I went deep on this one recently, so you can read my full-length review of the Well People mascara here.

Product: Beyond Clean Volumizing Mascara

Best For | Natural length
Natural & Organic Ingredients | 77% certified organic ingredients, GMO-free, fragrance-free
Waterproof | No
Price | $29

OGEE is a certified organic beauty brand that goes “Beyond Clean Beauty” with NSF certification and a minimum of 70% organic ingredients (the highest percentage in personal care). They’re committed to high-performance, multifunctional formulas that are cruelty-free, gluten-free, GMO-free, and made in the USA with sustainably sourced ingredients.

Grace’s Review |  I wore this mascara to Pilates and the teacher and class gasped! They 1) had never seen me in makeup and 2) were impressed that my long lashes were the product of clean ingredients. It stayed on the entire class — I even sweat a lot and it didn’t transfer at all. The formula uses Jojoba Oil to hydrate and nourish, Oat-derived Proteins to strengthen and add shine, and Raspberry Ketones to promote the look of fuller lashes. The brush doesn’t capture too much extra product, so there’s minimal clumping, and you get natural length. It came off in the shower with face wash.

Product: Soulgazer Mascara

Best For | Drama
Natural & Organic Ingredients | Vegan, prostaglandin-free, ophthalmologist-tested
Waterproof | No
Price | $28

Kosas is a clean beauty brand that bans over 2,700 ingredients and adheres to EU, Sephora, and Credo clean standards. They’re Leaping Bunny certified and formulated for sensitive skin with active skincare ingredients in their makeup.

Grace’s Review | I love the volume, length, and pigment of this mascara. I’ve been reaching for it daily: 1–2 coats for the day or 5 for nighttime. It’s buildable and gives you more of a glam look with your lashes, which I personally love. I use a Q-tip for cleanup around the eyes if my application is too passionate. Came off with makeup remover. The formula is powered by Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17, a lash-boosting peptide that supports visibly longer, fuller lashes in 6-8 weeks… I’m curious to see the results! It’s ophthalmologist-tested and safe for sensitive eyes.

Product: ten18 Lash Amplifying Mascara

Best For | Full lashes
Natural & Organic Ingredients | Meets The Credo Clean Standard™
Waterproof | No
Price | $24

Exa is backed by The Credo Clean Standard, the highest standard in beauty retail. They’re vegan, cruelty-free, and use eco-as-possible packaging, creating inclusive makeup that celebrates individuality.

Grace’s Review | I had never tried any Exa products and I was pleasantly surprised! This mascara gives you serious length and fullness on just one swipe. The fluffy hourglass brush builds dramatic volume beautifully, but keep a Q-tip handy for cleanup. It’s got a messier, bolder vibe than some of the others I tested. The formula uses Bamboo Charcoal Powder for intense pigment, Orange Peel Fibers for length, and Rice Bran Wax for hold. Even on Zoom calls, my lashes looked noticeably full. I used a few cotton pads of makeup remover to take it off – it’s got strong staying power, even though it’s not technically waterproof.

Product: Serum Mascara T50

Best For | Strengthening / clump-free
Natural & Organic Ingredients | 99% naturally derived, vegan, silicone-free
Waterproof | No
Price | $32

Typology is a French B-Corp certified brand with a “fewer ingredients, higher standards” philosophy. They formulate with a minimum of 80% naturally derived ingredients (most exceed 90%), are 100% vegan and PETA certified, and proudly made in France with no fragrance or colorants.

Grace’s Review | My lashes looked separated, neat, and tidy — this mascara is genuinely clump-free. I’d never tried Typology before, and I was surprised by how well it layered, elongated, and separated my lashes. The formula uses 1% Pea Peptides to densify and strengthen lashes, Castor Oil to nourish, and Plant-Based Keratin to fortify. I also love the slightly smaller bottle – it feels more intentional and less wasteful. Super easy to throw in a small purse and use on the go!

Product: Fullest Volumizing Mascara

Best For | Volume
Natural & Organic Ingredients | Natural and safe synthetic ingredients, ophthalmologist-tested
Waterproof | No
Price | $29

ILIA is a reader favorite for a reason! They believe in “makeup that makes your skin better,” formulating skincare-powered products with active levels of ingredients that protect and revive skin. ILIA is Leaping Bunny certified, cruelty-free, vegan, and a 1% for the Planet member.

Grace’s Review | This mascara gave me length with a natural, not glam look. I had to dunk a few times to get enough product because I like more drama personally, but it evenly coated my lashes and gave me some serious mileage. The formula uses Arginine to support stronger, healthier-looking lashes, Provitamin B5 to nourish and promote thicker-looking lashes, and a Weightless Wax Blend for full, flexible body. It came off with face wash in the shower.

Product: Clean Lash Mascara

Best For | Tubing mascara
Natural & Organic Ingredients | Vegan, clean ingredients, EU-compliant
Waterproof | No
Price | $28

MERIT is on a mission to simplify what it takes to get ready. Created as an antidote to an industry crowded with fleeting trends and products that demanded expert-level skills, MERIT offers a considered collection of beauty essentials with vegan, cruelty-free, and recyclable packaging.

Grace’s Review | This mascara feels seriously high-end…from the packaging, the brush, to the application. It doesn’t collect extra product and is very buildable. It makes my lashes look long and dramatic with many coats, or natural for everyday with just one. The formula uses Proprietary Tubing Film-Formers to define, separate, and lift without clumping, Plant-Derived Rice Bran Wax to add structure and length, and Fatty Acids and Olive Oil Esters to nourish and condition. It’s easy to remove with a cleanser.

Product: Mascara 101

Best For | Everyday wear
Natural & Organic Ingredients | Strengthening & moisturizing ingredients, cruelty-free
Waterproof | No
Price | $26

Saie is a clean beauty brand certified by 1% for the Planet, Plastic Negative, and Leaping Bunny. They combine potent natural ingredients with the best science has to offer, creating products that are both clean and effective with eco-friendly packaging.

Grace’s Review | Saie was one of the first good, clean mascaras I discovered, and I’ve repurchased it at least 10 times in both black and brown – even the mini! It’s lighter with one swipe but builds beautifully with layers. The formula uses Organic Beeswax to coat and lengthen lashes, Shea Butter to moisturize and create a silky texture, and Hydra-Mineral Complex to strengthen. This is my everyday, daytime mascara: It’s not dramatic, but it stays on without any transfer. It has pretty solid staying power, so I had to use makeup remover – but it comes off completely with no residue.

Product: Straight Up™ Volumizing Peptide Mascara

Best For | Peptides
Natural & Organic Ingredients | Dermatologist- & ophthalmologist-tested, sulfate-free, phthalate-free, non-GMO, non-nano
Waterproof | No
Price | $29

RMS Beauty was founded by master makeup artist Rose-Marie Swift in 2009 as a pioneer of the clean beauty movement. The brand uses raw, food-grade, certified organic, wildcrafted, and naturally derived ingredients, bans over 2,700 ingredients, and is Credo compliant and cruelty-free.

Grace’s Review | This mascara gives you bold volume and lengthening — and its healthy ingredients make me feel like I’m doing something good for the health of my lashes. The formula uses pro-peptides (Oligopeptide-2 and Arginine) to strengthen lashes, White Tea Leaf as a detoxifying antioxidant, and Shea Butter to condition. I did notice it was a little sticky (my lashes stuck together) when I smudged and went to clean up below my eyes. It stayed on all day — still intact when I went to take it off before bed. Comes off easily with face wash.

Product: The Mascara

Best For | Length
Natural & Organic Ingredients | Clean ingredients, cruelty-free
Waterproof | No
Price | $28

Jones Road was founded by beauty icon and makeup artist Bobbi Brown in 2020 on the philosophy that the world doesn’t need more beauty products – it needs better ones. The brand eliminates over 2,700 potentially harmful ingredients from their formulas (stricter standards than the EU) and is clean and cruelty-free.

Grace’s Review | The curved fluffy brush can collect a little extra product, so you’ll need to clean up the tip or it could clump – but once you get the hang of it, it delivers buildable bold lashes. The formula uses Vitamin E to condition and moisturize lashes and Sodium Hyaluronate for hydration and a smooth glide. I had a cry about something silly this testing day, and it held up great. Came off easily with makeup remover. Read our full Jones Road review for our editor Stephanie’s thoughts on lots of their products.

Product: Maracuja Mascara

Best For | Fruit-pigmented mascara
Natural & Organic Ingredients | Certified organic ingredients
Waterproof | Yes
Price | $28

100% PURE is committed to producing the purest, healthiest products with strict purity standards. They pigment their makeup with fruit, vegetables, tea, and cocoa instead of harsh dyes, and they’re completely cruelty-free and vegan.

Grace’s Review | This mascara literally smells like chocolate, which was a fun surprise. It layers beautifully and elongates well, though it can get a little clumpy as the brush can collect some excess product. The formula uses Maracuja Oil from passion fruit to smoothly coat lashes, Pro-vitamin B5 to condition, and seaweed to thicken – plus it’s pigmented with tea, cocoa, and coffee. I wore it to dinner and it stayed on all night with just subtle transfer onto my upper eyelids from the length it gave me. It came right off with facewash in the shower at the end of the day. My biggest complaint: The shrink wrap packaging was impossible to get off the tube, and left glue marks all over it.

Product: Uprise Mascara

Best For | Easy removal
Natural & Organic Ingredients | Clean, vegan, and cruelty-free ingredients
Waterproof | No
Price | $29

Cheekbone Beauty is an Indigenous-owned B Corp. The brand is committed to clean, vegan, and cruelty-free beauty with 99% natural formulas, and gives back to Indigenous youth through their scholarship fund.

Grace’s Review | The brush really separates your lashes without any clumping at all. It’s a light, natural application that gives you a little extra length. The formula uses volcanic pumice stone for buildable volume, natural waxes (sunflower and carnauba) to keep lashes lifted, and argan oil to nourish and soften. You’ll need multiple coats to build more drama, but this isn’t really a glam or night-out mascara: It feels like a day mascara to me — perfect if you’re not really a makeup person but want to elevate your look. It came off during a nap and was removed easily with facewash.
