According to an IPL release, David breached Article 2.4, which relates to “disobeying an umpire’s instruction during a match” on two occasions.
The first incident occurred when the umpires changed the ball after 17.2 overs in RCB’s batting innings. The release stated that David “wanted to have a look at the ball and did not hand it over despite being repeatedly asked to do so.”
TV visuals at the time showed David closely inspecting the changed ball and jugging it with one hand. Kannur Swaroopanand, one of the two on-field umpires in Sunday’s game, could be seen trying to stop David from juggling the ball. The other on-field umpire Virender Sharma then joined in to retrieve the ball.
The second incident occurred after 19.2 overs, when, according to the IPL’s statement, David “again did not hand over the ball to the umpires, amounting to repeated failure to comply with the instructions or directives of the umpires.” This is David’s first infraction of the season and he accepted the match referee’s decision after the game.
RCB are at No. 3 on the points table following Sunday’s 18-run victory at the Wankhede Stadium. Mumbai are eighth with three losses in four.
