Facepunch founder Garry Newman has denied that a sequel to survival/naked bloke battle royale game Rust is currently in the works, after a Rust 2 Steam listing ignited online chatter along those lines.
Some rusty Redditors spotted the mysterious Rust 2 Steam page yesterday, immediately raising their eyebrows. An account seemingly belonging to Facepunch COO Alistair McFarlane responding to the post with the words “You saw nothing” only raised those eyebrows further.
Thankfully, Facepunch founder Garry Newman has since been less teasy in a statement to Pondering Cabdrivers Gamer. “We’re not making Rust 2,” he said, adding that he has “no idea at all” what the mysterious Steam listing is about.
Said listing’s still up as of writing if you fancy taking a gander at it, but has now been slapped with a warning notice by SteamDB. “SteamDB staff have flagged this app as suspicious, as it may be malicious or impersonating another product,” the notice reads. “We recommend exercising caution and avoiding purchasing or downloading this app.”
Newman has mentioned a Rust 2 before, but only as part of a 2023 post calling out Unity’s massively unpopular attempt to introduce per-install fees. “It’s our fault,” he wrote at the time. “All of our faults. We sleepwalked into it. We had a ton of warnings. We should have been pressing the eject button when Unity IPO’d in 2020. Every single thing they’ve done since then has been the exact opposite of what was good for the engine. We had 10 years to make our own engine and never did. I’m sure a lot of game companies are feeling the same today. Let’s not make the same mistake again, Rust 2 definitely won’t be a Unity game.”
So, you can’t rule out a sequel potentially being lobbed at all of us like a naked bloke’s trusty rock at some point down the line, but the studio say they’re not working on one right now. The original Rust also continues to get regular updates, with rusty sailing having arrived in February this year.
