Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) prepares to open its Concourse C expansion ahead of the summer rush, the facility’s media team has taken to the airwaves to discuss the wide range of improvements that this multi-million dollar improvement program will bring to the West Coast hub. Among the obvious benefits related to capacity growth, the expansion is also good news for planespotters, as an observation deck is coming.
Even without the upcoming Concourse C expansion, there has already been plenty of excitement in and around the airport in Seattle of late, with the facility having also recently ranked near the top of a list of the least stressful ‘mega hub’ airports in the US. Let’s take a look at what the airport has in store.
The Concourse C Expansion Is Weeks Away From Opening
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is currently in the process of completing a four-story expansion to Concourse C, an area of the hub that handles Alaska Airlines flights. However, users of the facility might not even know that this building work is happening, with airport spokesperson Perry Cooper telling KIRO in a recent radio interview that the work is being done “behind [a] construction wall,” with “four stories of new space” being finalized.
According to KIRO, this project will see Concourse C nearly triple in size, at a cost of $399 million. In anticipation of this, Cooper explains that the airport “just opened two new lanes in our expressway as you’re coming into the terminal.” This, he says, is “a big deal for us to help try and relieve the congestion that’s on the drive.” The expansion is just weeks away from opening, with Cooper targeting the late May/early June period. He adds that:
“We’re proud of everything that we’ve got going on here. (…) This is going to be something that’s going to be a stunner for a lot of people.”
Lots To Love
The benefits of the expansion amount to far more than the fact that the obvious upside of increased capacity (although this, as detailed in the video below, will certainly be of great use this summer with the 2026 FIFA World Cup coming to town). There is a lot to love on the passenger side, with an observation deck among the features, which Cooper says is a “wide-open, airy space that’s going to be a comfort space to relax in between flights.”
Needless to say, the observation deck will certainly turn Seattle into something of a planespotting paradise, but this is just one of many improvements that passengers can look forward to when Concourse C opens. For instance, Cooper highlights the fact that “ten new dining and retail spaces” will also be present.
Inside, flyers can expect a “big, wide open space with light wood paneling” and “a big grandstand of seating space,” with Concourse C clearly designed to make a visual impression on those using it. This summer will be a busy one in Seattle, but the Concourse C expansion will make a big difference for flyers.

Seattle Was Just Named The US’s Sixth Least Stressful ‘Mega Hub’
While perhaps not seen in the same echelon of prestige as other major hub airports on the West Coast of the United States of America, such as Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and San Francisco International Airport (SFO) in California, Seattle does have an ace up its sleeve. Specifically, according to recent research conducted by Mozio, it is the sixth last stressful ‘mega hub‘ (33 million passengers or more a year) in the country.
Mozio’s research took into account various factors, such as the percentage of flights that depart within 15 minutes of their scheduled time, the daily parking rate, and the driving time from the city center, to give these airports a ‘stress score’ out of ten. When all of these factors were combined, Seattle came out with a score of 3.69, putting it agonisingly short of fifth-placed Charlotte (3.68). Still, it is certainly a good vote of confidence!
