US Army Advances Bell & M1 In Bid To Outsource Future Helicopter Pilot Training


The competition to determine the Army’s Next Generation training platform for initial rotary wing pilots is preparing to answer the final stage with just two contestants remaining. Lockheed Martin was eliminated, and the Final Phase of helicopter training bids will be between Bell Aircraft Corporation and M1 Support Services.

Bell-Textron is offering the 505 Jet Ranger X as a modern trainer platform for the Army, while M1 has proposed an upgraded version of the Robinson R66 NxG airframe, according to AVweb. The US Army expects to choose a winner by September despite some increased budget scrutiny from lawmakers.

The program that Bell and M1 are competing for is an outsourcing of training intended to improve efficiency and generate financial savings that could be reinvested in other training areas. The Army aims to contract out initial flight training to improve the quality of the overall program by freeing up funding for new programs. Additionally, the airframes that will be replaced are virtually unchanged from their original form in the 1960s.

The Airbus UH-72A Lakota is currently the Army’s platform for primary training. These airframes are nearing the end of their service lives, and the current competition is intended to replace these helicopters but also revamp the training curriculum. The program is designed to train between 900 and 1,500 pilots annually at Fort Rucker, Alabama.

The Army says the transition will be gradual, starting with 25% of students in the first year and reaching 100% by the fourth year. John Novalis II, Bell’s strategic director, gave this statement after the Army announcement:

“Bell is excited about the opportunity to partner with the Army for Flight School Next. Flight training is in our DNA, and we have the right team, aircraft, and an innovative solution to transform Army flight training at Fort Rucker.”

The M1 bid is supported by a consortium that includes Robinson Helicopter Company, General Dynamics Information Technology, Quantum Helicopters, and the University of North Dakota Aerospace Foundation. Unlike hybrid models that use different helicopters for primary and instrument training, M1 argues that the R66 is one aircraft that can do it all, reducing risk and cost.

Rather than following a rigid hour-based schedule, the program uses advanced analytics to accelerate high-performing students through the pipeline. Early demonstration programs have already tested using Robinson R66 helicopters to help students earn FAA Private Pilot and Instrument ratings before advancing to tactical training. M1 already manages maintenance for over 500 aircraft and supports 400 sorties daily at Fort Rucker as well.

The new program aims to eliminate training that relies on memorization and replace it with more proficiency-based learning. Both finalists are integrating Artificial Intelligence-powered virtual training environments and high-fidelity flight simulators to accelerate learning. There will be three phases of training included under the new program that is being outsourced: Primary, Instruments, and Basic Combat Skills.

Bell offers the 505 Jet Ranger X as a turnkey solution that is based on a purpose-built military variant. Bell has a long history of army training that goes back to the 1940s and the first days of rotary-wing aviation in the armed forces. Bell markets the 505 as a high-performance trainer that balances modern glass-cockpit technology with stick and rudder foundational skills.

Bell’s bid is an integrated curriculum supported by a team of industry specialists, including V2X, DigiFlight, and Alpha-1 Aerospace. TRU Simulation has developed a virtual reality trainer that features a six-degree-of-freedom motion base to mirror the 505’s actual flight dynamics. That complements the unique fly/idle switch in the real cockpit for instructors to simulate engine failures safely, reducing student and instructor workload during high-stress maneuvers.

The company already has a global footprint and a very well-established supply chain for the 505, which is already used as a primary trainer overseas for the combat Aviation branches of South Korea, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates. The larger airframe can also accommodate stadium-style rear seating for trainers and advanced avionics that make the transition to a combat platform like the Boeing AH-64 Apache smoother.
