What’s happening on (and off) Parliament Hill, plus the news you need to start your day.
A day after announcing another new addition to the Liberal caucus — namely, now former Conservative MP Marilyn Gladu, the fifth opposition member and the fourth Conservative to cross the floor to join the governing party since the election, a move that, as iPolitics notes, “all but ensures the party will emerge from the April 13 byelections with a two-seat majority” — Prime Minister Mark Carney heads to Montérégie, Que., to unveil what his office is billing as an “important initiative to diversify Canada’s trade and build a stronger, more resilient economy.” (11 a.m.)
Meanwhile, nearly 4,000 duly registered Liberals are set to descend on Montreal for the party’s biennial convention, which, as previewed by iPolitics earlier this week, officially gets rolling later this afternoon.
As yet, there’s no word on when the prime minister will make his first foray onto the floor, although he’s scheduled to address the crowd on Saturday.
According to the programme, however, his wife, Diana Fox Carney, will attend back-to-back closed-door sessions with the National Women’s Liberal Commission (1 p.m.) and Senior Liberals’ Commission (3 p.m.), respectively, this afternoon.
She’ll also make the rounds at the Judy LaMarsh Fundraising Cocktail this evening. (8:30 p.m.)
Earlier in the day, Northern and Arctic Affairs Minister Rebecca Chartrand and Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree will take part in a discussion hosted by the Indigenous Peoples’ Commission. (12 p.m.)
Later tonight, Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne will hit the main stage during the opening ceremonies, which will also include appearances by Montreal Mayor — and one-time Liberal MP — Soraya Martinez Ferrada and accessibility activist Keith Hansen. (6:30 p.m.)
Before joining his Liberal colleagues in downtown Montreal, Housing and Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson will make a quick side trip to Morin-Heights, Que., where, according to the advisory, he’ll join his Quebec counterpart, Caroline Proulx, as well as the mayors of Morin-Heights, Saint-Calixte and Saint-Jérôme and local Liberal MPs Caroline Desrochers and Tim Watchorn for a “housing announcement.” (11 a.m.)
Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister Heath MacDonald teams up with Prince Edward Island housing minister Kent Dollar and Cornwell Mayor Minerva McCourt to share new details on federal support for both housing and infrastructure during a morning visit to the site of a planned affordable housing project in Cornwall, P.E.I. (10 a.m. ADT)
Also on the radar: Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre holds an on-camera media availability in Richmond, B.C., that, as per the party-issued notice, is expected to focus on “property rights,” although in the wake of Gladu’s abrupt exit from the Conservative caucus, he’ll likely face a flurry of questions on why he keeps losing MPs to the Liberals.
